Softmodding is pretty straight forwrad, so there's no to little risk of you stuffing up your Xbox.
The best softmod package to use is "Softmod Installer Deluxe v2.0" made by myself. It's been tested and works on all different versions of Xboxes.
Yes, you have to remove the softmod if you wish to play Xbox Live.
When your softmod is installed, you should be able to play backed up games (also hacked games), plus most other stuff you would normally do if your Xbox had a modchip.

One of two places:
1) Via my site (my URL is in my signature)
2) The VIP Downloads section at this site here.
There is an information file inside the archive you download with the installer, plus I'm going to upload a PDF to our tutorial section which is a little more in-depth.

SID (Softmod Installer Deluxe) is what you run on an unmodded Xbox which is not going to have a modchip installed. It comes in the form of a gamesave that you put on your Xbox.
AID (Auto-Installer Deluxe) is a DVD that you use on either an xbox with a modchip, or an xbox that has been softmodded. It has apps, emulators etc. to install.

Softmodding is a great alternative for those wanting to work a small bit to get theirs to work, no need to open the box at all, just need a way to transfer a game save to the xbox, which can be via an Action Replay, or through ftping to a modded box, then transfering on a memcard.
They've became safe enough that they block xbox live so that you won't get banned, and several other great features. These will be released along with the new release of AID but that's a while away now.
I just got a modchip, today actually, so I haven't been able to test out to the full extents the differences, but I think a softmod is a great choice, I only got the chip to be safe b/c i test a lot of new stuff. _________________

Yup basically a modchip is for more advanced or serious users. A softmod can still play backed up games etc.
One good thing about some modchips though is that you can still play Xbox Live, but I can't remember which ones...
