as far as i know, a pc's dvddrive can't read an xbox disc. i don't know if there are is any firmware out there that would make it work. from a little research i have seen that people have replaced the drive with Samsung SD616-T DVD Drive and flashed it with the SD-605 firmware and it can play original xbox disks. i also found a firmware for the Pioneer leading me to beleive theres a replacement pioneer drive you could get aswell. other wise what most people do is ADD (not replace) another pc dvdrom drive , split the power cable, and add a switch to select whichever drive you want to use. the benefits of this are that the new drive should be a shit load more compatible with your burned media.

Basically, just purchase an Xbox DVD Drive that you can find just about anywhere on the net. I have a replacement Phillips drive coming from the warehouse as I usually like to keep one in stock, so if you need one I'll have it.

I can get samsungs here and there too.

I found a guy on Ebay that sells Thompson Drives (New from 2003) for only $27.98 plus shipping. His shipping isn't outrageous either.

I know there are some new hitachi models floating around, personally I haven't seen one and they are selling for as much as the Sammy's. I'd hold off on that flavor until we know more about it. I haven't had any probs using either of my Phillips or Samsung drives. I hate the Thompsons.

Going with one of these drives (Samsung, Phillips, Hitachi, or Thompson) that are made for the Xbox there is no need to worry about firmware flashing. I'd just go that route.

How do I actually change the DVD drive? I'm using a softmod. Will I run into any problems by changing out the drive? I'm tired of the dirty disc errors.

Hiya

It's just a case of undoing screws and unplugging cables, pretty easy, the fact you have a softmod won't affect it.

If you use decent dvd-r's then it does not matter what drive you get out of the 4 brands, the LG drives are pretty good in my opinion, bit better that the philips and not had any go wrong yet. Thomsons are ok if new and you are using decent brand dvd-r, anything less then get a philips or sammy.

If your techinically minded then you could also just change the laser or even do the pot tweak, bit cheaper anyway.
