I have a few quick questions about doing softmods. I purchased an Xbox yesterday (Nov 11) and was hoping to use a Softmods. What I need to finid out is if this method will work for what i want to Acomplish. I want to install EVox and Linux. I plan on using it for emulation, Halo Mods, Backing up my games. I also like using Xbox Media Center. What is the best exploit to use with the least amount of risk? What files will I need. Reccomendations(Yes I do know there will be risk no matter what) Thankyou for your responses

I personally have NO EXPERIENCE at all with soft modding but you are in luck my friend.. We have our new SOFT MOD admin called 'sjohn' who has just come on board to help us with questions such as yours!
Ive know for a fact after softmodding your xbox you can load a new dashboards, play backups, emulators etc etc.

There are really only two things that you need. the first is a copy of one of the 3 exploitable games, MechAssault (my choice), 007: Agent Under Fire, or Splinter Cell. You can normally find these in the used section of the local EB or Gamestop for less than $10, WELL worth the investment . Make sure that you do not get the platinum hits version of any of these games or any other rerelease. They have to be the original game.
Once you have that you will need some way to get the edited game saves to the xbox. Most people use an Action Replay. However some other people want to save money so they use their own memory card and a controller and modify the cable to go to a standard usb port. I won't go into detail on this because an action replay is just slightly more expensive than a memory card, and it comes with a crade for the included memory card.
I know for a fact that the softmod will install evox, play backups, play emulators, run xbmc, use programs such as dvd2xbox to backup games, and pretty much everything you can do with a normal modchip.
I however don't know about installing linux, never really wanted to, so I haven't tried. I know there are distros specifically made for the xbox, and even a live cd based on debian (xebian) that just runs off the cd and you have linux. The main concern with softmodding is the more difficult manner of changing the hard drive to a larger disk. There is a good tutorial on this site for that, I'm soon going to try it out and tell you guys how it turns out. You pretty much only have 5 gigs to be able to use towards apps, games, emus, etc. This doesn't really leave a lot of room for linux.
As far as the best exploit with the least risk, as far as I can tell the ltools installer for mechassault which is at version 1.8 seems to be the best out there. I am trying to update splinter cell and 007 to 1.8 but am having problems.
Those two games are at v1.7.5 and it has a slightly older version of the exploit. It works fine unless you have a PAL 1.6 box. It is still operational to my knowledge but you just can not see what is going on.
So lets recap:

Exploitable game
Means to transfer game saves from computer to unmodded xbox
And really that's all you need other than the actual files that you have to copy over. Again MechAssault seems to be the best game with the best exploit installer, you should be able to do anything that you would want to do with a hardmodded xbox, You can use 3 main ways to copy the files over: Action Replay, Controller mod to uxb, or modded xbox with ftp acces plus memory card.
