I did my first softmod using an old SID (possibly v3.1) over 12 years ago now. The reason I do no know is that I used softmodding game save files from another Xbox I bought, something I learned afterwards was not a good idea. I did not have PC at that time so this was the only way I could think of doing it.
The softmod stalled halfway through installation and I had to apply the included Patch 5960 file from the installer dash for the thing to work. But it did and the rest is history.
I still have that original parent Xbox and those files just as it was when I bought it but after several years successful use I updated that first softmod with AID v4.4 and it is still working perfectly.
I mention all this because just last weekend I did my first softmod in almost two years. It was actually a re-softmod but I used new clean files, effectively returning the Xbox/HDD to retail state before doing it with SID v5.11 (SC PAL).
As softmod and forahobby indicate: SID/AID, as long as you follow the instructions and use a bit of common sense then it really is very simple.
I'd still recommend Rocky5's Xbox Soft Modding Tool package or HeXEn in preference for complete softmodding newbies because the default set up gives you a much better protected one than SID's default.
Even if you are experienced anyone with third party Xbox users ie. kids, should always use a well protected softmod right from the start or they're asking for trouble.
However what I've always liked about SID/AID and why I'll always use it is that it doesn't hold your hand. Yet it still provides most of those same protection options but only if you want or need them.

Glue Sniffer Mod Circa 2013(the original no mess mod)
Although I run Babylon3 GS on my XBOX (go figure). It has some nice improvements over my previous builds or our SID builds
-Backs up eeprom with zero input from user by default before it even boots the installer
-Backs up C drive and creates an MS5960 backup by default (user has no choice it just does it)
-Can pull the eeprom and C and E drives with no mod installed or any backups done on the XBOX
-Has the XLive exploit so works with more games than any previous mod
-Has 6 alternate boot sequences. One fails it just moves on to the next
-100% compatable with all previous SID and Babylon builds

Since you are obviously running UnleashX on your XBOX you can skip the camera for screen shots. Anytime you are at the dash just press the left analog stick and the right black button. It will take a screenshot in BMP format and store it on the Z drive. Then you just FTP it off to your PC and you have a perfect screen cap in whatever resolution you were running your XBOX (480i/P, 720P, 1080i)

The same method applies if you're using XBMC too either as a main dash or app except the storage path it uses for the screenshots can be specified.
I have it set up for F:\Screenshots which seems sensible.
Back on the general softmod/setting up a new Xbox theme though I feel compelled to remind those fitting a new larger HDD that you make 100% sure the extended partition(s) are formatted correctly using the right cluster size for the size of the partition.
I installed a 320GB HDD in one Xbox a couple of years ago and as I usually use 120GB or 160GB HDDs did not think there would be any problem. I was using an older version of Chimp and did not realise it only formatted with 16K clusters.
That is fine with a 120GB or 160GB HDD where even if you use all the space for F:\drive it will still only be about 145GB. With a 320GB the F:\drive is close to 300GB ie. 50GB beyond the 250GB limit for 16K clusters which means that it should have been formatted with 32K instead.
I did not think to check and the result was when I went over that 250GB content limit the HDD corrupted and I lost a lot of stuff on the F:\drive.
That's still being sorted out a week on and has been a pain in the neck to deal with. Although I have backups of everything FTPing in 250Gb of material is not my idea of fun.
In short: use XBPartitioner v1.3 or the latest version of Chimp (261812) immediately after you install a new larger HDD to check that F:\ and G:\ (if used) are formatted correctly.
