Hey there!
Have a strange one. I recently picked up an orginal xbox that gets error 16 when booting up.
I opened it up to find a 40GB harddrive had been installed in it. I figured it may have been a soft mod gone wrong.
I followed this tutorial here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07MSbQPYhFc and still got error 16.
Is the xbox a complete write off or is it recoverable? When i do the hot swap it hangs on the xbox screen only for a short time before getting error 7 or if im too slow error 16, so after the linux CD is been run I have to reboot xbox.
Anyway, any help is really appreciated.
Cheers

Hi evilkud,
Sounds like you have some corrupt files on the HDD.. I'm not sure if this information will help you..
Service Error 16:
Info: Other files related with the dashboard or dashboard settings (specific dashboard error).
Error 16 means your xbox cannot find the menu setting with which you can set the clock of the hdd. This happens to a lot of people that erase their hdd (original/upgraded) or MS dashboard files and after that they don't immediatly install the hdd but leave the xbox without power longer than 5 hours.
Solution: You may have corrupted dashboard files on your xbox hdd. Use the 'HQ Auto Installer Deluxe' to reinstall your dashboard.

Yeah have read that, seems weird that even after formatting it back to standard using the linux .iso and then slayers disc I still get it though.
Im really at a loss and not sure what else I can do!

I'd use Hexen 2017 not Slayer's to restore the HDD. Try booting a DVD-R disc after burning the image of it to the media.
If that doesn't fix it/boot, you'll need to use XboxHDM and a PC to rebuild the drive -- XboxHDM23USB Beta 3.
You need to add the EEPROM backup, eeprom.bin (all lowercase), to the USB thumb drive in the same subdir where xboxhd.bat is located to be able to unlock/lock the HDD. This beta 3 version I'm told installs Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool. You can use a USB to IDE or USB to SATA adapter to access the HDD no PC with on-board IDE required.

If you didn't manage to get an eeprom backup, Pirrup's HOTSWAP tutorial might help.
E16- Brute force it. If you have a softmod save installed pop in the game and cold boot. It will bypass the XBOX C drive. And once you get into the save you can either rebuild via FTP or via gamesave provided its not corrupted.
Easy Hotswap- Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 games work beautiful for it. Pop one in, and when it boots up hotswap. You can take your sweet time unlike a normal hotswap. The game will keep the HDD unlocked so none of this try 49 times to get it right crap. And works way better than forcing e12 or e14 and swapping.

^ That is very useful information.
I've never come across that second method being suggested on any Xbox forum before so big thanks for sharing.

I think Tom Clancy must be a hacker. All his XBOX games have cool uses. Splinter Cell we all know, Rainbow 6 great for hotswaping HDDs, Ghost Recon works great for disc swapping and loading unsigned code (like Halo 2 and the map pack hack). Thats why I dont sell any of TC games, I may have 18 copies of R6 Lockdown and Critical Hour, 9 copies of the various Ghost Recon and 13 Splinter Cells. And thats probably why to this day I havent lost a single XBOX despite my best efforts to the contrary. Long live Tom Clancy games
