My sons old disc tray has packed in and saw a relatively cheap(er) xbox360e.

However I would like to take all the memory from existing HDD memory and put into the new console.

Can this only be done with a transfer cable or is there any other(cheaper lol) way?

Did you get your DVD drive tray working or does it still keep opening.
I have a post i made on here that may help you fix that drive.
This problem can be easily fixed by spraying contact cleaner in
the tray switch that detects open close tray.
