Hello all,
I'm modding my old Xbox for my little brother for Christmas-- upgrading the HDD, loading it up with emulators and games, adding tv shows, music, and all of that. I've done a ton of research/tutorial reading, but I'll be the first to admit--at the end of the day, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. So bear with me.
The original Xbox HDD is softmodded with the Linux installer/Splinter Cell save from an Xbox mem stick I was given, but in a moment of carelessess in trying to mess with the larger one, I have since deleted them. The files are too big now to be copied back from the Xbox, apparently. D'oh.
So last night I discovered this SID5 Babylon thing, and I want it SO badly--it has everything I'm looking for. It saves me a little trouble in sorting through endless romsets, or trying to figure out how to add XBMC to some other softmod without destroying it in the process, etc. I even read that the creator tried to make it "retard-proof." Sign me up!
Well, I've tried it twice now, and both attempts ended in the service screen--I can't figure out where I'm going wrong. I'm using the xboxhdm method with an old PC with the IDE connector...I've followed all of the directions, put the eeprom in the eeprom folder (and even configmagic-ed a fresh eeprom from the original HD after the first attempt failed, just in case), I chose my build and created the disk image without any "f*** off" errors or other issues, burned and verified the dvd, and ran the xboxhdm program with no problems. Everything seemed to go so smoothly, I'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work. It's probably something really glaringly obvious and I'm going to feel like a moron as soon as I figure it out--but I DID lock the hard drive, and I triple-checked the connections in the xbox. There's no error number on the service screen, I have the very first xbox version, and it will still play a game if I boot into it.
If anyone has any ideas on what might be the problem there, I would love to hear them.
I really, really would like to get Babylon to work for the all-in-one package it provides, but I do have a couple of alternatives on hand:
1. An XBOXHDM disk with NDURE 3.0. It works just fine, but I'm not too fond of that UnleashedX dash setup, and I can't boot to the MS dash in it because I apparently didn't get all the right files in the C folder before I burned the disk. Oops. I have dash files I could FTP in there, but with that shadow C thing complicating it, I'm really not sure where to put them.
2. An XBOXHDM disk with just the MS factory settings, and fresh SID5 installer files I could add to my erased mem stick. I prefer that version of UnleashedX, but I'm a little reluctant to sacrifice one of my two controllers and a usb cord to move the files around (especially if i could get babylon to work instead!). I'm under the impression that I splice a male usb to the end of a controller, and plug it into my PC with the memcard, right? Something like that.
Anyway, sorry this post was kinda long. Hopefully too much information is preferable to too little. Any thoughts or advice on what I should try next would be greatly appreciated... I've been at this for days, I'm running out of blank DVDs, and I am SICK of staring at that dang service screen!
Thanks in advance, guys.

Oh, well... I at least figured out that I could FTP the SID 5.11 files directly into the memory card without having to make any sort of USB-adapted frankencontroller. I'm still curious as to what the deal is with Babylon, but I don't have enough DVDs--or days before Christmas!--to go about troubleshooting through trial and error. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to share, but otherwise I'm just going to go with this Splinter Cell exploit for now. Thanks. Hope you all have a happy, non-denominational capitalist wintertime gift-giving season!

Whats the error screen number its kicking? E13, E21, E16, E06, E07 etc. If everything in the build went good Im guessing (and thats all it is) is you forgot to lock the HDD when you were done which should kick an E06 or E07.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
There are never any error numbers on my service screen, I'm afraid, so that is less than helpful.
But I guarantee I locked the hard drive (checked it twice!), and I obsessively followed the included tutorial--extracting to C:\, 8x burn speed, everything. I may not know my ass from my ankles when it comes to this stuff, but I am good at following directions! I also went through the whole process twice, on two different DVDs. I don't know... It all seemed pretty straightforward. I didn't get any error messages during the image building or in setting up the hdd... I was really surprised when I put it in and it didn't load.
The ONLY inconsistency I noticed was right at the start of choosing the build when it asked if I wanted to watch the tutorial. I said yes the first time, and nothing loaded... although I did find the video manually, so I know it was there. Maybe there was *just* enough wrong with my download to go undetected but still cause problems? Well anyway, it's no big deal.
I've xboxhdm-ed back to stock settings and modded with SID and splinter cell, and now I'm working on an XBMC dash with your 3.2.2 installer. That DVD didn't work entirely, either--some corrupted skin stopping the install-- but I saw on another post you suggested that one could extract the ISO and FTP the installer right onto the hdd. It actually worked! So I'm running my second attempt now, and if that skin is more than a DVD issue I'll just go in and delete it. Hopefully I've seen the last of my hard drive tinkering and can actually focus on adding media, now...fingers crossed.
By the way.. what's up with Isozone? I mean, you don't actually have to explain. But I made the apparent mistake of asking over there first, and my post was immediately locked with just "the creator of that program is no longer with us, go find his website," as the only advice or explanation. And yes, perhaps I would find more relevant information over here... but it sure felt like I was just being blown off over some community drama I knew nothing about. I was less than impressed.
Whatever their deal is, I thank you for all of the work you do in putting together easy-to-use programs for ignorant moddernewbs like me, and for being active and actually HELPFUL in your forum! It's much appreciated.

No E code is very weird and would seem to be an E21 (generic all encompassing BS error) You are actually the first at lt least to bring it to my attention anyways to have this issue. But with no E code or personally inspecting the XBOX I cant give a proper course of action
What you got with the tutorial is actually proper. The tut needed to be 1080P so people could see everything but the size made it impossible to include as it would push the ISO size far beyond the 4.37GB limit. Thats why Babylon2 is using an online tut that it auto loads when you type tut. I had been meaning to remove the tut option in 1 before release but it slipped my mind.
With 3.2.2 it was a matter of a corrupted archive that causes the error and I have removed that skin from Babylon1 so no issue there. Im glad the via HDD option is working for you, and Im sorry the HDM upgrade option has failed you.
As for Isozone its just a matter of a difference of ideals. We have differing views on homebrew software and on how to make it available to the masses. Im very hardline on my apps being 100% free which caused some friction between me and them. Nothing for you to worry about though as they will do as I asked and point users to me so I can log and fix issues they encounter. It may seem weird but its the best course, testing is very limited due to a lack of willing "victims" so the staff at TIZ agreed to close help threads for Babylon and tell them to come here.
Again Im sorry my app failed you but am here to help you any way I can.
