I've finished the last things I intended on doing with my modded box other than a plugin or two. This box has all the personality I wanted and dreamed it could be.

I would guess I have somewhere in the realm of 15,000+ games on this thing spanning 25ish years of gaming history and I cannot seem to focus on playing anything more than a few minutes.

There's a huge nostalgia that comes from cycling across the different pieces of artwork and being reminded of a game from your past; but more often then not the memory is better than the game when you go to play it.

I think it was just the tinkering aspect of it; I learned a ton in the process(while consequently bugging the shit out of people Embarassed) and now it seems I need another project.

PS3 seems to make the most sense and capture the whole ps2/3 libraries. Xbox360 would interest me if I could do it myself but from what I read it has to involve soldering. Hard to care about something someone else does for you as much.

So to other obviously dedicated members, what did you guys do when you finished your modded xbox?

^^ what did i do when i finished customising my box?
NOTHING but play on it! i don't get ambitious ideas incase i f*ck something and we all know the xbox like to randomise...RARELY
RIGHT NOW, dispel ANY thought of further customising it and just play on it!
if it works, don't fix it! (just my bit)
ps3? i only really use it for JRPG's and the 360 for XBLA coin ops....
i'm still stuck in the past, a time warp and have very little time for the present and even less time for customisations! (once softmod/nand flash has been successfully applied JUST THE ONCE, i forget about it and play on it. mod/customisations? it's all the same to me and DANGEROUS when persued in fun! seriousness only for me then i reduce the "brick" effect...not happened yet..so far!)
[edit]...
just a reminder that this subject is in the VIP suite so ONLY staff and VIP's will able to respond/comment as such...
the subject is invisible to everybody else otherwise...Razz
[TOP TIP] apart from the obvious access you get with a VIP account, it maybe a good idea if you make subjects (whatever they are) in the normal forums so anybody onsite at the time can see it and respond to it!
experts and opinions come from all sides, not just the echelon! Razz (you don't have to pay attention to the [edit] but if you wonder why the VIP subject don't get the coverage you want, now you know! as VIP, you can place your threads anywhere that nearest fits the bill, the option is yours and always has been, just know VIP specific subjects are obscured from the registered user and as all response are the same (to me and staffs) you'll get NO more and no less of our full attention should we see the subjects! the quality of assistance is all the same from us...)

Good point about the thread not being accessible. Doh!

I'm not too concerned about bricking, I won't be editing anything beyond custom screensavers, icons, and maybe a script or two to make things cleaner.

Is there any real difference in coin ops on 360 vs a regular box?

^^ it's NOT a rule just a recommendation is all!
at least based on the "all userbase equal opinion" i've come to love...AND EXPECT from above..Very Happy
i'll move this thread to "general discussion" so any xbox user has a fair opinion/response to offer should they choose?!
.....
okay, COPS (aka: coin-ops) i can safely say, i wasn't aware of the 360 variant at all!
i'm prejudice against COPS on the xbox original, i'm NOT gonna entertain a 360 variant when MANY technical issues (and user lockouts imposed from dev) have yet to be resolved...
...
in that respect, i can't offer ANY valuble opinion based on the use of COPS as it's caused me NO end of trouble..
sorry! Embarassed
(userbase please stand up and chip-in now, thank you very much! all perspectives and shared experiences count!) Razz

^^ no sweat! Smile
...
if you grab the SPPV line of emu installers and try FBL or FBA, you maybe surprised??!
those emus are better suited to specific types of board/core so even though the support isn't as wide as COPS, the list it does support is nearly PERFECT for most of the roms covered! (95% to original arcade HW easy)
you'll not get that kind of stability on COPS per game supported/covered!
..
as a fronted, it has a potential that wasn't tapped into, not least for the virtual mirror style update packages when it was just the frontend that needed the work...(if it was anybody else with some sort of sense, they would lift the locks and dummyfiles/item mirrors and focus on the ACTUAL cores themselves)
...........
an average COPS rom/item package is a cool 20+g's upwards as a standard and a LOT of that bulk isn't really game/rom data and when it is, it's mirrored in the same COPS directory somewhere to ENFORCE a specific path of end usage/NO CFG!
..
sorry about the text but it's good to know about what you intend on using!
try cops and one of the FB series on SPPV's emu installers and see for yourself! (in the games running, space used and EASE of use/permissions to direct paths etc..) Razz

Im using the fbl from vip downloads. It works great. Everything loads and artwork is perfect. I have a coin ops 5 dl but I haven't ftpd it over since I have full romlists for all the classic emus pretty much and that suffices.

Only things I've still thought about doing is some of the flashy art for the xbox games list instead of simple icons.

Well figured I'd put in my two cents here.

I decided to start going doing case modding and buy one of those clear cases for fun. Unfortunately they don't work well with newer xboxs and acutally fry the mobo!! Embarassed

I'm still looking to acquire another v1.0 xbox so I can attempt an upgrade to 128MB RAM and do the 1.4GHz CPU mod (both of which are difficult).

Since xboxs on craigslist in my area can go for as low as $15, it doesn't really matter to me if I brick a few in the process. It's all about learning as much about electronics and computers.

That's what got me interested in xbox modding. Emulators and xbox games were a side interest for me most of the time.

I might try the eject LED button mod to blue soon, when I go on a hobbiest electronics site and buy some.

Thats some next level stuff you guys are up to Smile

Awesome!

Changing ram and cpu sounds like a true enthusiast but sounds dangerous. I guess that's part of why my 360 isn't being modded, I hate the idea of having someone do it for me but I don't wanna brick it either.

Could always practice my soldering on crappy little electronics items like we built back in high school i guess...hmm

I know someone who has years of experience with soldering and hardware chip and motherboard design. So I've been able to shoot a lot of questions off of him. In fact, he did a PS2 modchip install himself years ago, so he understands my motivation to mod.

As soon as had learnt ( through this very website ) to hard mod xbox's my attention turned to messing with the game files and unleashx config.xml modifications and then plenty of unleashx skinning kinda happened, I used to publicly release my skins but have around 50 or more that are only on my own boxes. even when the JTAG exploit came out for the 360 and i did mine straight away, I still continued to tinker with my classic box and make use of xbmc / navi-x almost every single day.

I have 3 original box's and 2 360's and love them all ( and still use my overclocked megadrive and neo geo cart a lot too )

Xbox has brought true retro gaming to the masses and will always be my favourite games console for this reason.

The 360 will never have what the xbox has. shame but i have gotten used to this idea now.

Now days CPU upgrade is basicaly a myth. They havent made or sold the adapter you need to mount the CPU in years. Plus you need to reball the MOBO after removing the old CPU so you can Solder in the adapter. Switching from a BGA to a PGA is no simple feat. RAM upgrade is a cake walk compared, and RAM upgrade is hard as f#&@ lol
