Hi there, hope you wonderfull people can help me out with this.

I got a little carried away one day and built myself a xbox nas. Point is its just not getting used.

Looking at the guides for installing XBMC they all say Cromwell is a no no. None of them gives a clue as to how to get back to a none Cromwell Bios.

Question is can I change my bios to one that will load XBMC?

My xbox was softmodded then I soldered the points to flash the xbox's on board eprom with Cromwell.

Can I flash the onboard eprom with another bios?
Then boot from an XBMC install dvd?
And rebuild the empty hard drive with XBMC on it?

If I can ill be so happy, I dont want to buy another as this one is in pristine condition.

If I can does anyone know of a tuturial?
What do I use to flash the bios?
Can you recommend the best bios to install it?
Would the installer deluxe dvd do any of this for me?
Im not interested in an MS dashboard or playing XBOX games on it.

Many Many thanks for your help on this.

Ps thanks to everyone who put together xbmc having tried it on a mates im amazed you put MS to shame!!!!

Hello,

You can remove Cromwell by using the "EurAsia pro generic flash disc"

Download and burn the EurAsia flash disc to DVD-R.

Find a bios of your choice and rename it to "bios.bin" without the quotes, just name it bios.bin and burn that to DVD-R also.

Boot up with the flash disc, approx 30 seconds later the DVD Rom drawer will open and you switch discs for the bios.bin disc, then 10 seconds later the drawer will automatically close then the flashing commences.

If you have a v1.0 or v1.1 xbox you need a 1024kb bios file, i recommend the x2 5035 bios.
If you have a v1.2 to v1.5 xbox you need a 256kb bios, i recommend the iND-BiOS 5003.

Either of those bioses will allow you to run the AID, XBMCID, Backup xbox games or original retail games.

I have another xbox messed up with some old cheep mod chip im gonna pull out.

Its the exact same version.

I think what I did was use the 16plus version of the bios which was wrong I should have used the one with "old" in the description. I think that doubles itself up or somthing?

If not how do I find the x2 5035 1024kb as I can only find a 512kb.

you could use the x2 bios manager to create a 1024kb bios file out of the 512kb one, or download AID, extract the iso and look in the Bios Files folder.

Thanks for your help with this.

I have found that the second xbox has what looks like an xecuter2 lite 2.0 mod chip ????.

I found this image on google and its practicaly the only one on google that looks the same.

http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/3/xecuter2.1/x2lite_addon_xs.jpg

Problem I now have is that its only purpose seems to be booting ripped games so god knows what bios is on there.

I used the splintercell softmod to get me onto linux and I could see it was an xecuter bios, 3??? somthing.

I tried to boot into msdash and got a nasty error, dont thinks its there!.

So I guess I have no option but to use the modchip as is. Does anyone have any recomendation for this chip. I dont even know if its a 512kb or 1024kb.

Im guessing the x2 5035 would work if it were modded to the right size (thanks user1 for the reminder on how to do this).

Im just hopeing its not a 256kb.

Again all this is so that I can load from the deluxe xbmc dvd and install to blank hard drive.

Thanks for all your input user1

After some heavy googleing I am under the impression that its a 1meg 1024kb chip so Ill have a bash tonight flashing it with a 1meg X2 5035 bios.

I hope I can use the Eurasia flash disc to do it.

If this aint working then im off to ebay to find one for a fiver just for the motherboard lol.

Thanks again

Yes you can use the EurAsia disc to flash, or as Wes mentions you could use the AID iso updater to include the bios pack addon to your AID iso image, burn it to disc and use that to flash.

I think that mod chip does have a 1024kb chip, but i think its two banks of 512kb, each selectable with a switch .... I dont know, but id research it some more if i was you prior to flashing.

You guys rock! thanks for all your support!

I went feet first and flashed the bugger last night with a 1m off the aim disk.

Happy days! It worked!

I could still not boot the xbmc installer dvd which is what I was trying to do in the first place and the only reason I wanted to update the bios???

After a coffee or two it dawned on me its booting burnt cd's but not burnt dvd's.

It boots the splintercall game fine so it cant be the dvd lens right?

All I can think is that it cant read the blank dvds I have bought?

Ill check the dvd drive model tonight but I kinda wanted an xbmc that would play anything?

I have a power splitter and so im thinking maybe ill have to replace the dvd drive with a pc dvd drive with a bit of plastic chopping.

Will the xbox running this bios run with any old pc dvd drive?

I whipped out the sandpaper iso rub and paint last night its going to be white to match the sky box with some nice xbmc grafix on there....sugestions?

Pictures to follow.

Just read up that its not the type of media its cos I aint burnt them using booktype rom ! This is bad news for my film collection Sad

I have also read that I can swap it out easy without leaving old drive in cos I have a mod chip (not interested in games).

Thank the lord out with the dremel. Think I need to find a short drive though and dont know if I should bother with a burner or not????

Getting ahead of myself, a little excited and sorry if its turning into a build thread lol (Could someone move it if need be?)

Put myself a short shopping list together, suggestions/comments?

List

1 Flat 133 80 conductor ide cable.

2 PC cd/dvd burner.

3 Component cable to enable HD

4 Wireless gaming adapter. (mounting internally)

Reasons

1 Ide cable apparently is a must as the 40 conductor cable restricts the data flow heavily and im told that FLAT ribbon performs better than that gathered and tubed up stuff.

2 I am under the impression I can burn cd's and dvd's using xbmc if need be.

3 I am aware my Pal box need a soft fix of some sort to enable HD and that my tv needs to support HD NTSC (I think it does). I just don't know if a HD Pal video file would look better down-scaled to current PAL setup or converted to HTSC ??????????

4 I really cant feed wires through the house for this one and I don't want it hanging about outside the box. can anyone suggest the best one to mount internally and also use WPA with. I was looking at F5D7330 and the WGE111.

Other mods planned.

Air shell/housing/tunnel to pull air through the gpu and cpu heatsinks just like the 360. The xbox fan is rather quiet and I believe I can drop the speed in the bios/dash settings but I want to ensure the cooling is focused to avoid overheating. I don't really want to replace the fan since its a nice fit as it is.

Usb ports already added to ports 3 and 4 dvd remote sensor will be hiding behind the 2nd port and 1st port left just in case I need to use the old game pad.

I have some Blue cathodes somewhere but don't know if I should make it glow or not (will have to check with the Mrs or maybe add a switch)

I don't even have XBMC loaded yet LOL

Update.....

1 Flat 133 80 conductor ide cable. Done

2 PC cd/dvd burner. Done, not as easy as thought though!!!!!

Had to hack yellow cable and find signals for tray open, tray closed and cd ready. I reversed the open and close and used a nand gate to reverse the ready signal as they all gave 5v when 0 needed and 0 when 5 needed. I also connected the eject signal out of the yellow wires so its all working nice apart from two issues. Reading certain burnt dvd media which was the whole point of adding the drive and the fact that the drive spins at full speed when it does not need to making watching a film a nightmare. (solutions in progress on another thred)

3 Component cable to enable HD. On hold till I get the dvd playing sorted.

4 Wireless gaming adapter. (mounting internally) On hold till I get the dvd playing sorted.

I have painted it though, its white to match the sky+ box......
