Post subject: Replacing XBOX HDD

Hey Guys:
I just joined this great site after getting a working XBOX (Manufactured 2005).
Although I build my own PC's and have been doing so for a long time, I'm absolutely confused as to what method for upgrade is the best and easiest for a noobie.
I found a shop in my area that had two consoles for only $10.00 a piece. In one, the HDD is totalled with clicking sounds and code 07 and flashing red ring. The other is working fine but it's old and dirty (2002 unit).
So now I have one perfect system and the two $10.00 units.
My primary question is what's the easiest way to replace a broken HDD? Can it be without a mod chip? If it does require a chip, which one do you recommend?
From what I've read (I think I understand), if the HDD is still working, a larger HDD can then be softmodded into the system? Does it still require hot swapping to a PC? AHHH. Too many questions. I know (sorry).
I know these are basic questions so please excuse my ignorance.
I guess I'm trying to ask what the best approach is. Any help is appreciated.

You can try the hot swap but if that fails then you need an eeprom reader to get your eeprom and then you can use xboxHDM to build a new hdd or a mod chip of any brand will do.

(recap) Hot swap worth a shot, eeprom reader will be harder on a noob but should work fine, chip damn near a sure fire fix.

Read up on these things in our Tutorials and see what works for your skill level.

Any modchip will make things easy.. Once you fit a modchip and install your new drive you could use AIDELUXE burnt onto DVD-R/CDRW and it will auto detect the new drive and ask to format it ready for xbox 1. - http://www.aideluxe.com

This is by far the easiest method.. Modchips don't care about whether the hdd is locked etc either..

Softmodding on the other hand there is a bit more too it, you need to use software on the xbox (once its modded) to clone your hdd and backup the eeprom and other info.

hope that helps a little and sorry to ramble, its been a long day.

cheers,

hobbs

Post subject: HDD Cloning

I was finally able to softmod my "experimental" xbox (only paid $10.00 for it) using SIDS 4Smile For some reason unknown, I couldn't get SIDS 5 to install properly, SIDS 4 works fine though. Anyway, I used the dual boot method using Unleash X as the dashboard. I then was successful in using Chimp to clone the drive (my real goal) to a larger one. AID worked really well also. That's as far as I've gone.
When I tried the same techniques on my Version 1.6 XBOX, The softmodding went well but the HDD cloning did not. Green screen then nothing. I've since learned that 1.6 boxes require FTP from a PC. The problem is that I cannot get Unleash X to save the altered Gateway and Subnet Mask. The altered IP Address saves just fine. Any ideas why this is happening?
Also, what app should I use to read the EEPROM so that I can at least write it down?
Thanks guys.

I would guess that config magic is the best tool to get the eeprom code.

you could try finding the .ini file for the network settings and manually save them to that file.. the .ini or .xml file should'nt be hard to find.. It may even be stored on E:\ drive but its been a while since ive been playing with unleashx.
