I'm probably not looking hard enough, but nothing has seemed to help thus far.
The current XBox: model 3944, original xbox, no mods have been done thus far.
The dvd drive (original) has just died off, causing a massive amount of noise being produced from the unit whenever the unit is on. I've decided to replace the drive pretty soon, but also decided to hotswap the HDD into my PC and check it - it was also at the end of it's life. Using the softmodding strategy found here (http://www.instructables.com/id/EV7Y5G8962EWT1KBI0/), I made great progress in attempting to backup the drive, but a problem arose - the drive died before I had a chance to finish it. I've tried everything that I could think of to recover anything from the drive (I've had plenty of experience), but nothing has worked.
Now I've taken an extra 80gig HDD and followed these instructions (http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html). Everything seemed fine, yet when the drive is in the unit, I get an error screen (You're XBox requires service crap) without an error ID. I've done this with afew Xbox's thus far (this is number and this is the first time I've run into this situation.
Any advice?

Did you lock the new drive is all i gotta ask? Simple fix for this would be buy a mod chip and a mod chip will run an unlocked drive. Then your xbox would run again. Before you get an error code though, i can't tell you whats wrong. _________________

Just checked the drive - it appears to be locked. I also turned the xbox on without the DVD drive installed and it somehow loaded the dashboard without any issues. I didn't think that an unmodded xbox could do that...

That leads me to beleive your DVD drive is messing with your xbox. Buy a new DVD drive and put it in and see it if it fixes the problem. _________________

That's what I've always run into, but this is wierd. I decided to go ahead and replace the dvd drive as I was originally planning, yet it acts the same - no error with it disconnected, unknown error when connected. I'm beginning to think that this unit is messed up.
I'll be buying a mod chip for it pretty soon - maybe it'll help bypass the problem.

Might want to get a new IDE cable to see if that helps, the DVD part on the IDE cable may be shot. _________________

A new IDE cable has been installed and the problem is still present.
I've been considering flashing the BIOS and see if I could built up this xbox like I did with my nieghbors, but considering that this problem exists I don't know how I should go about it.
How can I flash the BIOS without being able to load a game?
I'd prefer to flash the BIOS over installing a mod chip due to lack in funds.

If you don't know how to TSOP an xbox you could kill it. Did you get a new dvd drive yet to see if it fixes the problem? _________________

Swapping the DVD drive seemed to do nothing.
I took a dvd drive from another xbox, the future dvd drive for this unit, and a random dvd drive from an old pc in my house to try. All resulted in the same error with no ID. Without the dvd drive attached to the IDE cable, I receive an error code of 01.
I'm beginning to think this guy is a lost cause...

Error code 1 is a motherboard error. So that will be a big problem... _________________

After staring at the guts of the unit for a good few hours, I noticed something strange - the heatsink was uneven. I turned around and lightly tapped on the sucker and the whole thing tilted - it looks like when I removed the HDD I somehow knocked the heatsink alittle bit off. I removed the processor and heatsink (nothing was holding them in place, NOTHING!) and reattached everything properly.
Shouldn't the processor be soldered? Shouldn't there be thermal compound between the processor and heatsink?! This first-gen xbox is f'n wierd, 'specially since it's never been opened before me...
Anyways, after that interesting discovery everything is working perfectly! I used NDURE 3.0 to get a new HDD going and the only problem now is that I'm having issues replacing the DVD drive.
I've just turned around and placed the drive over the original, hooked the IDE cable to it and split power from the HDD to power it, yet it won't work. All of the tricks that I've learned and others that I've found through google aren't working...
But I'll work with it for awhile before seeking help.
