Hi, i'm fairly new to this...
I softmodded my xbox about a year ago, and every runs great .. Thank You Xbox HQ.
I am now looking to install Maxtor 80GB HDD (DiamondMax 16) into my xbox can anyone tell me how to do this?
Also, why is it important to be able to lock the HDD?
Thanks
Disneyvilla

Hi,
Looking at the serial number and this website http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO (i'm sure this info is available on Xbox-HQ but i can't find it)
then it is a version 1.0 which was made in Hungary (factory code 03 last two digits)

The xbox is structured to marry the eeprom and the hdd. If a hdd doesn't have the eeprom signature, the xbox will not function.
Click the tutorial link under my sig. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

First backup your eeprom to your comp just in case something goes wrong...
get hold of an app named chimp (install it as a app on your Xbox) then use that.... it's the fastest way to do it, there is a tutt on this site on how to clone it with that program.....
Hope this helps mate.... _________________

Chimp is definitely the app to use. I went from an 8Gb to a 160Gb using Chimp with no problems at all.
You will nee a molex splitter though, or another way to power the new HDD during the process. There is a link to a Chimp to tutorial under my sig.

Well finalcloud you must be a real buff in linux lingo coz i am not. Its a lot of mumbo jumbo to me. I tryed the chimp with no luck bloody hard to understand what is going on with this program unless you know the lingo your buggered if you have not done it already. Try look from the dummys eye an you would see what i mean. I wish someone that dose these programs put there tutors in more depth so dummys like me could understan it and put together and come up rosey if you catch my drift. Its one thing to make a program another to understand it though new eyes.
p s: Edited by wayneski he he sorry finalcloud just joking i remembered!!!.

Reading the tutorial, i guess you need access to a chipped xbox to run the chimp? Is this correct?

Might i make a suggestion?
Although very dangerous if used incorrectly, ConfigMagic can and will make backups of your eeprom for you.
If you set up Evox (EvolutionX Dash) properly, that will also create an eeprom backup.
Lastly, using Krayzie's NDure method to softmod will get an eeprom backup created via the script when you start out, before any of the mods are installed. It places the eeprom in E:\backups\eeprom
use any of those tools, with the proper precautions, and you'll get your eeprom backup made.
Keep in mind, for hard drives larger than 120gb, you will want to set the LBA-48 patches accordingly. I use 0.06 (standard C, E, 1 large F) for hard drives between 140gb and 250gb, and i use 0.067 (up to 137gb on F, the rest on G) for anything else. It has no effect on drives less than 140gb in size, so stock hard drives and smaller (80gb) drives are unaffected, and it keeps larger hard drives (300gb+) from corruption.
on REALLY big hard drives (500gb, 750gb) you will need to use XBPartitioner to format the drives into 32k clusters.

If i use the chimp would i set the new HDD to slave while the chimp is installing/ cloning the HDD? Is there an option to format the new HDD as the 80GB HDD i intend to use has been used for something else?
Could i use an action replay card to put chimp into E/apps?
Thanks

Yes, the new HDD would be set to slave during the process, as they will both be connected to the same IDE bus. After the clone is complete, you then swith the new HDD to master.
Chimp literally clone's the old drive onto the new one, utilising all available space on the drive ready for you to use. It erases all data on the new drive (if there is any) before it clone's, so it effectively does a format for you. I used chimp to go from an 8Gb, to a 160Gb!
Finally, yes, you can copy the Chimp files onto your action replay and copy them over to your box if you wish to do it that way, although FTP'ing the files would be much easier. As robbieboy said, install it in either E:\Apps or F:\Apps and you'll be good to go.

Chimp worked a treat
Although.....All the space on the new HDD is on F Drive ( about 72GB)
i currently have 3 games on the HDD ( E:games which were copied from my old HDD) but now with the larger disc, i want to put more games on there. How do i use the space on F: or do i need to ammend something in the settings? I guess it would be to change the partition size of E: and F: but i must admit, i would not know how to do this
