so about a month ago i bought an Xbox from a kid at work hoping to softmod it (which i did) but it never really played the games right they would always freeze up etc. the games were all scratched and dinted though. and when i ftped a game over from my friends it works fine but i went and bought a game today in perfect condition and it says that the disk is dirty blah blah blah so i think there is something worng with the dvd drive, but i dont know if it is a dirty lens or if my drive is just shot or whatever i am new to this Xbox stuff and could use all the help i can get... also it wont read any bootdisk i have made for my new harddrive so i have been forced to resort to my old harddrive until my problem is solved.
any help?

You can try to clean the laser with a cotton swab and alcohol.
Other alternatives:
1.Replace the laser assy.
2.Replace the DVD drive.

thank you and that is what i was thinking...
now would it be worth it to just replace the drive? are there any benefits that would come of that?

If you've got a bad DVD drive it's always worth it to get a new one. It is a simple plug and play installation, as long as you replace it with an original XBOX DVD drive.
