Hey folks, I've read through a few tutorials throughout the site but honestly find it all a little confusing. To me the point of a tutorial is to take someone step by step in simple terms through a process they're not familiar with. So far I haven't found that.
Anyway, here's my question. One tutorial dealt with using the break away portion of an Xbox cable and solder same coloured wires to the female end of a USB extension cable. I have done this, but when I start up my xbox and go into Memory, it doesn't recognize the USB stick. Is there any pre-preparation that has to be done to the USB stick in order for it to work? I'm confident that the solder connections are solid and that all the wires are separated properly. Any thoughts or advice on what the issue could be?
Thanks,

Some USB's will not work with the Xbox.
You might first wish to check against the database below, keeping in mind that not all USB's are listed.
Also, you'll need something like Action Replay that will work with the Xbox.
Simply plugging a USB into the Xbox will format the USB, but it's memory would be blank. If the USB isn't formatting, it may not be compatible. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Ok, so I got the USB memory stick configured. But now when I try to copy the two gamesaves of Splinter Cell, I no longer see it as a USB device as it's formatted differently. So, how do I get those game saves onto the usb stick? Or is that what Action Replay is for? Because I can't find, see, or open the game saves from within that either.
Help please

So can anyone help me determine why when I have ActionReplay open on my PC, and I have my Xbox formatted USB stick plugged into the usb port of the computer, I can't save to the memory stick?
In the AR manual, it says the Orb in the middle is green when the mem card is inserted. So either my USB is not compatible (even though it was formatted and selectable through the Xbox dashboard), or I'm just doing something wrong, or missing a step. Anyone out there have a next step suggestion for me?

There is an alteration in the PC registry file that needs to take place, otherwise the PC will reformat the USB then when you stick it in the Xbox, it will reformat it again.
I will try to find that tutorial. I think it was Dangermouse that showed it to me when I was doing the same thing.
Finally I found it. Whew that was a while ago.. anyway here's a link that will help to get your USB and Action Replay to play nice together.
It worked well for me with a generic USB thumbdrive.

Well I just got one from the class page from a great power seller here. It comes with the 32mb stick along with all the cables needed. It was better then the Action Replay for the same price. You should check it out and get one _________________ The mighty V6 Passat came to chew bubble gum and kick%^* and shes all out of bubble gum!

I have an apple and it will not work unless I do a ton of crazy stuff...so I am just going to DL the SID4.5 unzipp the files then FTP them to my Xbox. then save the game save files and installer from my box to the usb stick...then I will be good to go from then on...and I don't need the software. _________________ The mighty V6 Passat came to chew bubble gum and kick%^* and shes all out of bubble gum!

Shark2th, thanks for the link. That looks like the same tutorial I followed from another user here on Xbox-HQ. It formats my thumb drive ok, but after looking at the list of devices I'm guessing my problem now is that the drive(s) I have are not on that list, so perhaps that's the reason why AR doesn't recognize it. Based on that it would seem that I'm SOL for softmodding? Someone mentioned doing ftp from my pc to the Xbox. If I do that I wouldn't need the thumb drive at all right? I'd just have to know where to transfer the files to. What do you think?
