a while ago i soft modded my xbox to run xbox media center. everything worked fine, i can use xbmc without any software problems. the issue is that the original hard drive is dying. i have a disk duplicating machine that i use at work but my disk is locked. i pulled the key out of the hd-backup.txt file (or whatever thats named) but it fails to unlock the drive using hdunlock.exe. i think the key may have been gernerated after i installed xbmc or something because its just not working. i would like to use a new 60gb drive and i dont have a mod chip. the ultimate question is how do i clone this drive to another if i cant unlock it? another possible solution would be to get xbox media center installed on the new drive without using the xbox. i am downloading auto installed delux now but im not sure what it can do for me. a point in the right direction would be very helpful

yea the problem is that i cant unlock the drive, its referenced in all the tutorials. i think i found a solution though, using xboxhdm 1.9 i can make a new drive from scratch and copy the contents from the current drive via ftp to a computer, burn to a cd and then move from cd to new drive. since im at work i havent been able to test this yet.

If your old drive is working fine, and you're running SID 4.5, then follow these steps to build your XBHDM disc:
1. FTP into your xbox and navigate to E:\UDATA\21585554\000000000000\backup
2.Copy the contents of the above folder to XBHDM's EEPROM folder. THen backup your E drive as you so please.
3. Create the iso using "make-iso-win.bat" and then boot your CD with your FRESH HDD attatched as a master drive in your PC
4. Boot your XBHDM disc and you will get a menu, now choose Option 1 (by typing ‘1’) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ‘xboxhd’ when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ‘Build a new Xbox HD from scratch’) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. If you put your C: and E: onto the CD then when it asks you about them type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes .
5. reboot the PC
6. Now for locking the hard drive. This time type ‘3’ and hit enter to boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities. Next, type in ‘lockhd -a’. It will now search for the eeprom on the CD and will automatically lock the hard drive. Now turn off the PC and take out the hard drive when it has finished locking. Put the disk in your softmodded xbox .
There, your new HDD should be built and ready to go, my friend.
Portions of this were taken from Pirrup's upgrade HDD with softmod tut found here:

Y splitter for power? Screw that, I'll just run it off a separate CPU PSU. I've got one hidden in my closet that I keep around for emergencies. Might be cool having a PSU hooked up next to my xbox, lol. But I think I already know how chimp works now that you said Y splitter. It makes sense and damn, that's cool, lol.
I'm assuming it loads itself into memory after unlocking the current HDD, then has you switch out the IDE cable and it locks the new HDD right then and there? If that's right, that's damned nifty. I think I'll definitely start checkin that out... question though, can it transfer all the files and such? _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

its Working! i tried the hdswap method and it was super easy. one thing to note though, my drive came default on cable select and needed to be changed to master. it took me a minute to notice that but after the jumper was set correctly everything worked great. thanks guys!
