I softmoded a xbox for a mate using sid3 and aid2 and now his xbox wont play any games from disk and when i told him to go in file manager with a disk in he said it had not bytes and when i told him to try a dvd film in XBMC it didnt work. Could this be a problem with the softmod or do you think by the sound of it it needs a new drive.

PS: at the moment it has a samsung drive would i be able to put a thompson one in

Try a different drive in it.

It can`t hurt.

first of all, tell him to try cleaning the drive with a DVD cleaner disc. It's funny that he has a samsung. I upgraded to the PC-DVD drive (Samsung 616t with 605b firmware) and it's never given me a problem in my 1.0 box. My thompson that was in there originally blew donkey nuts. But, from the sounds of it, no, it's not a softmod problem.

If you really think it is the softmod, restore the MS backup through the SID menu so the box is back to stock. Don't worry about deleting any of the other data (Apps, emus and such). They won't effect the box once restored to stock.

If any disc you try doesn't work when the MS backup was restored, then it's the drive. If not, I really don't know. DJB and Pirrup would be able to really help you a lot more on this subject, but I've never heard of a softmod screwing up a dvd drive.
