my hardisk has died on my xbox, am i correct in saying i can just plug in any old formatted ahrddisk, put it on cable select, & boot from your dvd & it will automatically prepare the new harddisk for use in my xbox?

i looked at the tutorials on xbox scene & it says you must copy all the files off your existing harddisk, & copy back across to the new one, summat i cannot do when my ardisk is dead.

i have an old 20gb one lying around i plan to use. am guessing my live account will die however i will have to accept this.

is this correct? or is there more to it than that

cheers
.

Alright, if you have a chip, then yes all you do is drop the new drive in, and insert AID. Then prepare and format the drive, copy over the needed dashboards and applications, and you are ready to go.

However if you haven't modded the box at all (or are softmodded without a backup of the eeprom) You will most likely need to buy a chip to be able to salvage the xbox. I see that you said you had a live account, if you are fond of this account, you may want to consider a completely new-to-you xbox that way it will have a matching hard drive and eeprom. However you said it didn't really matter so I would just buy a nice chip and then go from there.

thanks so much for your reply. yes i can accepot the loss of live... will get a 360 in 6 months or so so that will have to do then.

cool thats good to know. do you *need* a working harddisk for it to boot properly? i dont have your installer (yet - am making it so now) but i do have an old slayers installer 2.6 (sorry not sure if its bad form mentioning an alternitive) however most people online seem suprised that no disk will boot what so ever on my xbox at the mo, however i know this disk used to boot fine. Am just wondering now if maybe there is a different fault & its not the harddisk :/

i wasnt doing anything untoward when it stopped working (using xbmc at the time, the xbox froze & on reset gave me an error 13, & now it wont do squat.

With an error 13, a softmodded box should still be able to boot games. That being said, load the game you used for the exploit and redo the softmod. That will get you rolling again. Once you're up, backup the eeprom and get a hold of xboxhdm. You can use that along with the eeprom.bin to format and lock the 20gig that you have. Pirrup has an m$dash you can d/l if you want to get on live.

OK,
since you have a modchip, make sure that the chip is on and you have your auto installer in the drive. Slayer's should boot...if it does, try to install the EvoX dash. Hopefully that will get you by until you d/l AID. AID has a retail dash that you can load onto the c: partition. You can have that and have EvoX on e:. So when you have the chip turned off it will boot the m$dash to get on live, and when it's on, it will boot the the EvoX dash.
If I remember correctly, XBL has an option to restore an account. It will read your eeprom and allow you access again.
Cheers

ok well i unlocked the harddiisk & plugged it into my pc. pc sees it in the bios, & it shows up in device manager however it says there is a problem & windows cant access the drive.. so i guess the harddisk is fubar however 1 last confirmation, so its true is it that all i have to do now is hook up any ide harddisk, & put in the auto installer disk & it will do everyhing i need?

then all i will need to do is lock the harddisk & i will be away. I will have to scrifce xbox live i guess untill i get my X360.

if thats the case i will have to go on the hunt for an old ide disk. cheers
M.

If the old drive is showing as corrupt in windows ALL IS NOT LOST most likely. Windows doesnt recognize the file system is all. Try using it on your main ide (ide 0) with xbhdm. Should boot into dos and don't forget to lock it when finished. Hope that helps. (worth a try anyway)

thanks everyone for your thoughts am help. I found an old 10gb drive lying around & chucked it in. its not lockable & its NOISY as sin however i have got it working again.

so that will do until i come across a cheap longer term solution. a mate at work may have a 20gb drive i can have for a 5er so if thats any quieter (it must surely be) that will do.

If you lock that hdd and put a retail dash in c:, you can boot with the chip disabled. That will boot the m$dash so you can restore your live account. XBL will only check if c: has a retail dash with no signs of a softmod. It doesn't look in e: , but it does require that the hdd be locked to the eeprom.
