I have asked and have had so great help, but for some reason I can't get it done. First, I had trouble with softmodding and the forum helped me through that. But, now I ca't get connected from my laptop to the xbox.
I have the crossover cable, unleased x, and SmartFXP. I have got all the way to were it connects to my xbox, but it losing the connection after about ten seconds and never allows me to click and drag the file over because the xbox files never show up.
Ihave two xboxes that I would like to get the hard drive change out and fully mod.
So, that is why I want to find someone in town to "show me". I learn better from watching than the old read and apply method.
The site I used to softmod the xbox had a step by step with pictures that was really good. If someone can explain it to this simple minded man I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Why???..???...
???...How is spending money on a router going to make this easyer???..
have you bought some shares in linksys or something???
I know personally how much of a pain in the ass it is to set up an xbox and a pc to do ftp`ing but when you learn this method, It set`s you Free almost.
being an absoloute newb myself once (ok. it was only a year ago)
I can still remember why I had so much trouble with it.
I was trying to use flash fxp at the time ( I now use smart ftp as its free )
it would not connect for love nor money, untill I left it trying to connect to the xbox whilst I played around in the settings. the moment I messed around with the duplex mode it worked.
( network connections \ right click on lan or high speed internet\right click on it and click on properties\ then on configure\ click on advanced.
in the box you should see link speed & duplex. mine seems happy set on auto but try changing to half 10 or something and see if it connects (whatever one works for you )
If this doesn`t help then either your either not using the right cable (patch cable doesn`t work computer 2 computer, only x-over will work) or your network settings need to be set right.
try putting these into your laptop as ip settings
i.p. 192.168.1.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
gate 192.168.0.1
leave the dns blank ( just click ok when you have entered the gateway no`s)
and then put these into your xbox
i.p. 192.168.1.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
gate 192.168.0.1
again make sure your dns is set to 0.0.0.0 the same as the pc (remember we left it blank)
making sure you save and exit on the xbox (saving the new settings you put into it)
reboot the xbox and you should see the i.p. you have given it.
If not- make sure that your xbox is set to static i.p. not dhcp, if you have to change it at this point make sure you save exit and reboot the xbox so that the new network settings are deployed.
I really hope you can get this working & Good luck.
I have to go to work now, Plumbing in london suxx.
but I`ve got my ipod to keep me amused (4g linux at last! yippie!, took me till 2 in the morning to gather the guts to try it)
