it seems to be common beliefe that if you buy a non locking hard drive you cant use it in the xbox. you can as long as you use a bios that suports it like evox. the only downside is you cant go live. but there is an upside , say some kid delets your dashboard you dont need your eeprom backup to unlock it just re write the dashboard and any crap you want using hard drive creator and your done no endlisly wondering where you put that diskyou created it with in the first place or searching your computer for a file you last used 2 years ago. its preventive maintenance especialy with kids

Just to clarify for some of you reading (that may not understand), this REQUIRES a hardware modded box (hence the BIOS comment). You can NOT use non-locking hard drives on a SOFTMOD box.
In fact, one thing I wish had been made clearer on all the SOFTMOD FAQ's that I read early on, was IF you plan to use XBox LIVE! regularly, it simply is not practical to run a SOFTMOD (it was probably stated there clearly enough, I just missed it). And, it can be less forgiving to potential future dash changes (i.e. say you get a new game, and it suddenly upgrades your MSDASH).
I would heartily recommend that anyone thinking about modding their box go ahead and TRY a SOFTMOD. It is a WONDERFULLY easy thing to do and a great way to try out all the things a modded XBox has to offer. And realistically, the absolute WORST situation that can happen, is you don't get your eeprom.bin backed up to be able to unlock (or worse, relock) your stock HDD, and you have to install a hardware mod (door stop your 8GB drive and move on with life, happy with the 250GB new drive you installed with your now fully modded box).
