Hey everyone... I need some help here.
I'm not scared to admit I'm a total newb. I'd rather admit that, and ask for help, than screw up my Box and make it a doorstop...
I have a pretty virginal Xbox. I do have a pre-modded Samsung 616T drive that will be thrown in, but other than that, it's clean. I plan on going out tomorrow and buying s 200GB 7200RPM Maxtor HDD...
I have MechAssault; the version on the underside of the disc reads MS02301L. I know I also need to get a MS memory card, and I have an Xbox controller pre-modded to USB which can substitute for the Action Replay (for transferring gamesaves)...
And they seem pretty straight forward... I just wanna make sure everything will be done correctly, though.
I just need to know the best, most laymens instructions for installing a softmod to the Xbox, including the MS Dash, and then upgrading the HDD to the 200GB...
Any and all help will be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

at least they link to the xbox-hq forum
but the guy didn't give us credit for the tutorial
OK! Went forth tonight and softmodded my Xbox... Original hard drive went PERFECTLY... However, when I went to replace the stock drive with the 200gb Maxtor I bought today... ran into a speedbump. It wouldn't lock! So, after some googling, I found a forum where someone had the same issue... and they said they simply tried it in a Dell, and it worked. Well, all my roomies have modded PCs, but I went ahead anyway... and from what we can tell, it worked!
One last question though-- On EvoX, system config-- where it displays system stats and the like-- It says "Lock Enabled"... That DOES mean the drive is LOCKED, right? I just want to make sure this is right, in case I ever wish to cold-boot a game for Xbox Live...
Thanks once again!

first about the locking problem :
it will say the dirve is frozen and can't be locked
> workaround is disable autodetect from IDE1 (or just disable ide1)
xboxhdm will find the disk even if it's disabled in bios.

about the lock in evox:
NEVER unlock your hd on a softmodded xbox!
a softmodded xbox needs a locked hd
cheers

Right, I'm not intending on unlocking my HDD anytime soon. I was just asking for verification that is -is- locked. EvoX saying "Locking Enabled" in the menu = A-OK?
Like I said, it was able to lock on my friend's PC, I just wanna make sure I'm not falling victim to newb-suckage and the thing is not good yet...

i only skimmed, but if your using your upgraded hdd in a softmod, the hdd is locked, or else it wouldn't be working and you can't cold boot a game to play on Live anyways, you will be banned for it. your best option for Live use, will be to swap back in your original hdd and format it and re-install M$ dash.
