There's basically two ways, pc assisted, or pc unassisted upgrades. The first would use sometype of program where you transfer files from the xbox to the pc, then make a linux boot disk, xboxhdm 1.9 does all of this for you so I recommend it. This is really good for all xbox versions.
The downside to this method is that you have to have a PC not a laptop, a cd burner, and the knowledge of how to make your pc boot of the cd. Pretty basic stuff really, most everyone has all of this.
The other way is to use a program on the xbox, and a small cable you can pickup at most computer/electronics part dealers. What you do is run the program and then plug in the hard drive to this cable which is also plugged into the other hard drive, and then take the ribbon cable off of the dvd drive, and then hit a few buttons, and it copies the old hard drive to the knew one, and then it allows you to lock it. This is good on xbox version 1.0-1.5, it can be used on v1.6 however you won't be able to see the screen, you will need to hook the xbox up to the network, and also have some telnet knowledge in order to connect to the xbox, and feed it the proper commands (basically picking the options from a menu system.)
Give me more information on the method you want to do, and I'll try to elaborate more on the full details. Either way you need to verify the hard drive is lockable, and also that you can physically replace the drive. _________________

Hey sjohn,
could you point me in the direction of where a tutorial might be for that second way you mentioned. The new HDD I'm trying to use is in the compatible list, but neither mine nor my friends pc's can lock it.
Thanks
DD
by the way it's a softmodded , v1.0
