I soft modded my xbox 6 months ago. I also upgraged the hard drive to a 250gb WD hard drive. I am running XBMC as my dash and it has been working great for over 6 months. I have not changed a thing on this xbox it has not bee moved or anything. The other day it started freezing in the middle of playing a DVD movie also freezing during game play from hard drive. Somtimes it will boot up fine and freeze after 20 minutes or sometimes it just starts blinking green/red on the front and comes upt with the service needed message. It doesn't feel hot on the outside. Could the hard drive be going out? What piece of hardware does the Frag error indicate?

Thanks for the links. The one link says frag means a major component is bad, so basically my xbox is dieing and I can't really do a thing about it. This is so frustrating. It took me forever to get this thing soft moded only for 6 months of use. I have the worst luck with this kind of stuff. I think I am going to try putting the original hard drive back in it and see if that makes a difference. Any other suggestions?

You should also check the temps. If it's running hot that could cause the problem you are describing. Sometimes a combination of a fast hotter drive and dust buildup on the heatsynchs will send it into overdrive.

If this is the problem search around for the following that all help (others have already written good tutorials on all three):

1) Change the fan out to an 80mm 12V fan that runs off the HD power cable.

2) Cut the back of the Drive tray (the black plastic) to allow for better pull of the hot drive air out of the box.

3) remove the heat synch thermal compound and replace it with Arctic Silver 5 or something good like that.

I don't speak C but in F you should be able to easily keep the temp below 130 CPU and 115 MB. I run at significanlty lower than that. I can't remember the kill temp but it's around 145F or something like that.

Anyway if this isn't the problem hopefully it will help someone... Smile

boing!
