hey im quite a n00b 2 modding the xbox. but ive been attempting hundreds of softmods for some time now. ive downloaded thousands of different files and used quite a few methods. Finally i resorted to buying MechAssault just to use the linux softmod. it worked but it was all in french so it was guesswork. anyways i ended up totally fu@*ing it all up and the dashboard it loads i guess is corrupt? i get the "xbox needs service" crap, error code 13 i think. foolishly, i thought accessing my xbox through my pc network and deleting the linux software would fix this but now i just simply cant run my french linux off MechAssault. I think i may have to resort to buying a modchip, ive just taken my xbox apart and put it back again for practice and it went fine. i need help!!!!! Do i buy a modchip? If so which one is best? Will this solve my problem? What to do???

Hey,
Your write the Dashboard is corrupt or deleted. Error 13 is the bios failing to find the Dashboard.
You can use Pirrups tutoial which will help you recover your HDD without a EEprom backup.
I personally would chip it with a Xecuter 3 or Xenium Ice. If your not handy with a soldering Iron The Mod God is in the US and very good value/service.
With error 13 you should still be able to cold boot the game and re-install the softmod. I say get your hands on AID v2.11 and use the softmod files from there....or take a french class. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

WoW thanks for the great advice people u rock! ive decided to purchase the xenium ICE package which includes a solderless adapter. i dont wanna risk any souldering. so anyways im just making sure, if i buy this and stick it in my xbox, will it boot through its own bios first instead of taking me to the "error needs service" screen? do i need anything else apart from;

Once you get your modchip installed you will need to FLASH IT with a hacked bios before you can boot BACKUPS, DASHBOARDS and Auto Installers.
Its very simple to flash a XENIUM modchip with a BIOS..
You can follow many tutorials right here on HQ..
Ill link you to some now that i know will help you flash your bios:
I would suggest flashing your bios with the EVOLUTIONX M8 (evox_m8) bios..
It works great with the xenium.. Also before flashing with M8 bios make sure you have the right version of the M8 bios for your xbox.. There are two versions.. 1 x version for xbox versions v1.0-v1.5 and the other for v1.6 xboxes.

thanks loads for your simple tut and advice, so in answer to my question, the bios or anythng wont be edited at all when the modchip is installed untill ive flashed it with a chosen download..... so i will stil just get the error screen? if yes, how will i be able to access the dash the modchip comes with?
UPDATE: ive also done a bit of research to find that when pissing around ftping stuff to and from the xbox, i didnt screw with the bios at all i just deleted the dash, or some of the MSdash files.

Thats right.. Most modchips are shipped with a LEGAL cromwell bios..
Meaning you will have to flash your modchip with a HACKED ILLEGAL BIOS to get backups and emulators etc to work..

When you install you modchip you should get the FLASH BIOS screen..
You can then flash your modchips bios.
