yes you can, as matter of fact modchip is not necessary to install evox or unleashx, and hard drive upgrades aren't necessay hard with softmods.

but buying a modchip, easens your life.

why?

1.- install modchip is risky if done wrong, but it's more reliable then softmods.

2.- never pay for modding your system to a dude that's gonna rip you off. 200 dollars *meh*

3.- if you plan to upgrade hard drives, well, think of what size you want, check compatibilites (locking features) and make sure you set your bios to read the partitions correctly.

4.- i suggest you do what i do. READ ALOT!. why you ask?

I've only been in the xbox modding for around a month, and thx to all that reading in forums, tutorials, and reading here, i know so much, i never could of thought of......hey, i made my own script for a softmod installer and it's kick ass. now, go to tutorials here or xbox-scene and learn stuff so you don't get ripped off like many ppl do.

about the 200 dollars.........how big is that drive your gonna get? O_o
you can get a Maxtor 120 gigs for like 100 us dollars these days or less.

good luck, and read more. Cool
