Though I'm sure I know the answer to this, I'll still ask it.

Has anyone found a successful way to replace the stock HDD with a larger one (say, 80GB, ATA133 Maxtor) without the use of a HW mod? If so, what's involved in the process, and what should I acquire to make this happen? Also, where could I acquire an XBOX-ready ATA133 cable?

If not, I do plan on acquiring an X-Ecuter 3 with the custom CPL in the near future, expenses willing. Any links to HW mod-related HDD upgrades would be helpful if in fact I absolutely need to go that route.

If it helps, here are my XBOX specs:
XBOX V 1.0 w/NO HW mods
Seagate HDD (came from a dead 1.6)
Phillips DVD-ROM (and a slightly unstable but still useful POT-tweaked Thompson on the shelf)
007.AUF softmod, used ltools to install the dash
Boots EvoX 3935 dash (w/Bert and Ernie), also have UnleashX (app mode) and functional MS Dash installed

On a side note, I'd like to know if it's possible to switch my softmod EvoX dash for UnleashX. I love the ease of use in EvoX, but the flexibility of UnleashX just makes EvoX look so pale. If there's a tutorial on that or any info that would be useful. Thanks in advance!

see http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/postt8408.html where I asked a similar question. (I'm doing penance now).

Short answer yes you can upgrade to a larger (even very large) hard drive without leaving a softmod environment. You'll need the SID3 tools from the AID2 package.

boing!

Hey, thanks for the info. The AID2 manual also lists a method for installing a large HDD in a soft-modded system. I appreciate your response. Thanks again!

Good news!! Installed 80GB Maxtor via AID2 manual instructions, and it works flawlessly! I had one hitch during the new drive creation, though.

I don't know if the AMD64 i use or the board it runs on was the culprit, but I couldn't lock the HDD on my primary computer (AMD Athlon64 3000+/Winchester core on ASUS A8V Deluxe w/512 MB DDR400 in dual-channel mode). I had to take the HDD and the HDDMaker DVD and port them to my second computer (32-bit, AMD AthlonXP 2700+/Thoroughbred-B core on ASUS A7V8X-X, 512MB DDR333 non dual-channel). Once I installed the new XBOX HDD into that computer with the HDDMaker DVD in the DVD drive, I was able to lock it without incident and the HDD booted flawlessly.

Now I'll need to figure out how to replace my EvoX dashboard with UnleashX, because I like that one so much better. But that's a new topic in itself. Thanks again.
