Is there software that MODs an xbox WITH OUT using a chip?
I have a friend that claims that he can but won't share the info.

You won't find any better guides for softmodding than here on HQ. The official SID manual page is here: http://www.aid.xbox-hq.com/index.php?cmd=manuals. There are also some forum topics that really help too, if I find them I link to them later. Gotta get back to work. Peace

You've just found here everything you couldn't ever dream about!
The name of this ''magic''software is SoftMod Installer Deluxe 3.0 and the name of the ''Houdini of Softmodding' is DJB ( author of the soft and Admin of this site).
But first you have to have good basics computer skills (you or a friend) to be confident in what you're about to do because a failed softmoding (it's the name of the method to ''chip'' a Xbox with softwares without opening it) could be harmfull
for your machine.
Second: You'll have to read a lot and ask questions here before proceeding with your first softmod.Let's start by this usefull link to have a very good idea in what could be done or not with SID 3:
Third:After you figure out how to put a hack savegame from a memory card on your Xbox You'll have to make a complete back-up of your Xbox C:\drive on your computer by FTP using SID 3 as a boot CD or DVD (including EEprom and HDkey wich are the keys in case something goes wrond during installation)
Finally,you'll need an original Mechassault,007 Underfire or Splinter Cell DVD game (older versions ONLY...no Platinum or Game of the Year Edition)
The only negative point comparing a chip mod and a soft mod is that softmod won't allow you to play anymore on Xbox Live.(but who cares?)

HEY! thanks so much for all the replies. I'm a vet computer geek but i'm new to modding,. Where can I find SID 3.0? So far, all I see is the manual....

OK. I downloaded the SID program.
I copied the SID.007.AUF.v1.0.Xbox-Hq file to a madcatz memory card.
How do I get that file onto the unmodded Xbox hard drive??

You transfer it like any other gamesave. You go into the MS dashboard in the memory area and select the memory card. Select the actual gamesave and copy it to your hard drive.

Do I copy the whole SID.007.AUF.v1.0.Xbox-Hq ZIP file or do I unzip it on my computer, then burn it to disk, then put it on the momory card?(wich is how I tried it the first time)

Well when I used action reply to put mine on the memory card I just dropped the entire zip file on the memory card. I didn't unzip it or anything. One time I did get a bad copy so don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time.

OK. I tried that and I was able to copy the game save over to the hard drive.
But the save does not show up when I go to "Load Mission." Does it matter that the game is a "Platinum Hit?" Thats what it says on the CD.

Any of the SID gamesaves cannot be used with platinum hits version of their respective games. One quick question, when you copied it to the hard drive, the gamesave showed up as "Run Linux" in the MS dash, correct?

I went out and got a standard 007AUF. So I should be OK there. But what about the memory card? There are 3 files on it. do I delete them? Do i need to format it? If I understand correctly, there should be a total of 4 files on the memory card if I did it correctly, right?
