are there any problems with xboxes overheating if you don't install an extra fan?
i'm looking at *possibly* buying a dual hard drive xbox (one stock, one 200 gb) so i can xbox live, but with another hard drive in there, won't it get pretty hot pretty fast? have any of you had problems with overheating? will having extra heat in there lower the lifetime of the xbox?

1) you cant use both xbox hdds at oence so if they are on som type of power switch where only one hdd is running then you shludnt have much of a problem.
2) you can always edit your bios and up the fan speed or buy a 12v fan adapter.
3) i havent had an heat issues.

I actually had an overheating problem soon after I did my modchip. I started playing games off the harddrive (games i owned of course), and I guess it just heated things up inside. After about 30 minutes of playing, it just shut down and you heard the fan go crazy. I fixed this by doing the 12v fan mod, and all has been perfect ever since. Also, if you really want to help with heating, you can do what I did and take out the harddrive to the outside of the xbox with an external case that has its own fan, and everything runs much cooler (harddrive even runs at around 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit.) _________________ XBOX- V1.0

As far as overheating, if you allow plenty of space on the left side and right side of your machine so the vents are not blocked, I see no reason to install an extra fan.
I am very surprised you had overheating on a 160GB HD. I have four machines now that are modded. The only one that I have put a fan into was one with a 400GB HD.
I have one with a 300GB, no fan. Never an overheat.
I have two others now with a 200GB HD no fan upgrades, no overheat.
Now, the 300GB is in a 1.0 version machine so I do have the extra fan on the board, so that does help. I personally think that you should not worry unless your temp goes over 150 degrees. Most of the time it's going to hover around 147.7 or less depending on ventilation and HD size.
In the machine I am doing for you peasulroo, I truly believe you will not have to worry about any heat factors unless of course you put your Xbox somewhere it cannot ventilate properly. You can also tweek your bios to upgrade your fan speed if you wish. Putting a larger fan into an Xbox case is a daunting task. First off, then do not fit. You have to hack various areas of your case and HD tray. You have to zip tie the new fan it and even hack the fan in certain areas so it will seat down in the case.
Then, you should get a 12v fan upgrade kit which is a cable that allows for connection (piggy back) off of the main HD power source.
It's up to you if you want to go through all of that, but for a 200GB size HD I truly don't think you will need it.

HA..holy smokes..you keep your temps under 100!! Wow. With a stock HD the temps are usually around 113 and 121 with a 1.0 mobo... But, keeping your system cool is not a bad thing
So, indeed if you want results like less than 100 degrees..you will either need to operate your machine outside in the frozen tundra or do what he suggests and pop in a new larger fan..
You aren't doing yourself an injustice by installing the fan by any stretch of the means. It really just depends on what your preferences are. There really is no right or wrong until you start going with very large HDs and/or dont get the clearance you need with the vents.

I keep mine at about 115 - 117F, I just run the stock fan at 70%.
I have seen two boxes overheat.
1) My 1.1 after I installed an x3 chip. Ran fine with the SmartXX v2. Put that x3 in and at 127F the box shut down every time. Put the SmartXX back in and haven't had an other heat issue. 200 gig HD
2) Friends 1.6 box with x3 shuts down after 4-5 hours as it gets too hot even with fan at 90-100%. 160 gig HD
Don't like those x3's. every box I have seen them in runs 10F hotter than other chips.
Both boxes would kill the video then frag on restart.
