I just finished softmodding an xbox with a hdd upgrade (Western Digital 250 gig) and shut down the box to make sure everything was fine. When I rebooted I got an error 8 message. I thought that it had to do with the dvd drive because it wouldn't open, so I took it out and opened it up, realigned the lense and made sure everything was on track. When I plugged it back in the dash booted fine, so I turned it back off, and the same error code appeared. I looked up the error code to be sure that it was the dvd it was refering to but I was wrong. Come to find out it is an error code saying that there was no hdd found. I was kind of dumbfounded as I knew that it was able to find the hdd because I was just in the dash. And it was kind of odd that everytime I repaired the dvd drive the dash would boot fine.

Well, further investigation of the box led me to find out that the box was refurbished. And that kind of made sense now, they must have just taken a bunch of broken boxes and pieced them together to make a good one. Plus, I failed to mention that when I was in Config Magic the eeprom wouldn't show the Phillips dvd rom or any at all as being connected.

So, my fix to this was to replace the dvd drive with another that I had just lying around, and Walla!!! I works like a charm, So if anyone happens to have an error code 8 and can't figure out why, this may be one of the solutions that your looking for.
