Hey,
With all these posts about config magic I got wondering. How can you use config magic to lock an upgraded hard drive? I've used hard drive manager and the putting a chip in. I'm assuming you softmod the box. Copy the eeprom from the original hard drive. Then use config magic and put it on the new upgraded hard drive that has been prepared using a chipped box??? Could someone please explain how config magic works. Thanks! I'm just trying to learn as many methods for softmodding as I can. _________________ Blue Chaos

I just used my xenium OS chose HD upgrade, put in the softmodded original HD and the new (larger) HD in the DVD spot when promted and it copied everything (including EEPROM, apps, and the softmod) to the new HD. THen I turned the box off, put the new HD in my chipped machine (again) in the HD spot and locked it. You can also lock it using config magic _________________ Xbox v1.0

So you can lock it using config magic in a chipped box and then it will work in the orginal box? I thought you had to lock the hard drive in the xbox you want to use it in, no? _________________ Blue Chaos

You need first the EEPROM on the new HD from the xbox you want to lock it to....usually easier to lock it with the xbox you want it locked to, but it can be done on a diff one _________________ Xbox v1.0

ya thats what i want to know lol. How to do it in another xbox lol. I know how to do it in the xbox it will stay in. Okay ... so i softmod the original harddrive, ftp into it and get the eeprom, prep the upgraded hdd in a chipped box, load the eeprom of the original hard drive onto the new prepped hard drive, and then lock it? So you dont have to use config magic? By just having the eeprom from which box you need it doesnt matter how you lock it ??? if so cant i just use the AID disc locker?
thanks for your responces so far Andrewfrink!!! _________________ Blue Chaos

I used the xenium OS to lock it......put I put my chip in my friends box then locked it just to be safe....but in theory it should work with the EEPROM from the softmod in your chipped box _________________ Xbox v1.0

In theory it should ... hmm ... I'll test it later today and we'll see if we FINALLY have an easier way to lock a hard drive rather than using hard drive manager or putting our chip in someone elses box! God I hope this works! Okay here's what I plan to do:
1) softmod a friends box (FB) and copy over the eeprom and udata (for his games) to my comp via FTP
2) Prep a 160gb hard drive in my spider chip box with UX dash, apps, games, etc. via AID Disc.
3) Copy the eeprom and UDATA from the FB's original hard drive from my comp via FTP and put it on the 160gb hard drive (while still in my box).

Heres what I would do....
1) soft mod his HD and load it with apps
2) put his HD in your chipped box
3) use a HD upgrade tool to copy everything form his HD to the new one, using your xbox
4) Lock the new HD in your xbox with the EEPROM from the softmod
5) put the new HD back in the softmodded xbox and hope it works _________________ Xbox v1.0

Though this might be obvious, check the HD database and make sure your 160gb is lockable, or else you will be wasting your time _________________ Xbox v1.0

This might help you out, I just put it in my post "hdd fix"
Ok, so this is what I ended up doing...
I had: 1 busted softmod box (dash error 16)
1 eeprom backup of sofmod box (in file named softeeprom)
1 chip modded box
1 laptop
a copy of config magic
a copy of flashfxp (ftp program on pc)
This is how I fixed my box.
I turned on the chipped box and ftp'd into it using flashfxp (alternativly you could use any ftp program to do this) I then found the "ConfigMagic" folder under my "Apps" folder... within this folder is another called "Data" whithin that folder are some files...i.e. eeprom.bin, and eeprom.cfg... I copied these files to the laptop in a file named "chippedboxeeprom". After that I deleted the files "EEPROM.bin and EEPROM.cfg" from the chipped box, and replaced them with the softmod backups "EEPROM.bin and EEPROM.cfg" from here I didn't turn off the box or disconect from the ftp I just went on the xbox itself and ran ConfigMagic
When in ConfigMagic I preformed these steps:
1 Unlock HD
2 Load eeprom from .bin file
3 Update xbox eeprom
4 Load xbox eeprom
5 Lock HD
When this was completed I could now take the softmodded hdd and put it directly into the chipped box. because the chipped box is basically a mirror image of the softmod box now, it can unlock and lock the softmod box's hdd.
After the soft hdd was in the chipped box I just ran an auto installer disk (I used AID 101) and reformatted the entire hdd. I also added all the apps, emulators, and a hacked dashboard (avalaunch).
I then took the hdd out and put it back in the softmod box... and replaced the chipped box hdd. Ftp'd back into the chipped box and and replaced the eeprom.bin and eeprom.cfg with the chipped box's origanal eeprom files. Ran ConfigMagic and repeated steps 1 through 5... Now the chipped box is back to normal.
I did run into two problems, I'll go over them one at a time.
1. When I put the softmod hdd back in the softmod box it should have loaded up Avalaunch as the dashboard but it did'nt... It loaded up the original MSdash... so I had to preform the softmod on it utilizing a savegame exploit. (I used the Splinter Cell) while inside unleashX I applied the softmod and installed the evoxdash, and put the AID 101 disk back in, installed the hacked dashboard Avalaunch again, and it worked like a charm, everything that I had installed with AID in the chipped box was still on the hdd. PROBLEM FIXED...
2. After I had the hdd in and all was working well, I noticed that the hdd wasn't reading in full, it was a 250gig reading the f: at 124gig or somewhere close to that, and with the G: enabled all the G: showed was error. After thinking long and hard I remembered that there was a handy little tool called XBpartitioner. Using this program I set the F: and the G: to read the exact same space about 115gig to 120gig, and restarted the box, enabled the G: in Avalaunch, rebooted and it now showed an F: and a G: with equal amounts of space, giving me my full potental hdd space.

The reason your softmod booted the M$ dash when you put the HD back in is because you didnt have a hacked BIOS anymore (when you loaded it up from the AID it expects the chip to have a hacked BIOS) so when you installed a hacked BIOS via the softmod it worked.... _________________ Xbox v1.0
