Well you won't be able to play any commercial Xbox games with it, unless you use the original drive to make a backup of them...
A CDRW won't have write capability unless the correct software is installed on the Xbox. At this time, I am unaware of any software that can write from the Xbox.
A faster drive might also cause heating issues, but an extra fan could negate this.

Heya, there are very few drives that will work in the xbox, and they normally require a bit more work than just the power splitter, look at the yellow cable going to the dvd drive, try unplugging it and see what happens, it supplies more than just power, it carries the signal for activity etc.
Unless you got wiring diagrams of the drive and can reverse engineer you may be stuck. There are a few tutorials for fitting certain samsung drives in but it's not really worth the hassle in my opinion.
The cdrw won't write, you will be lucky for it to read, and what about the fact that 90% of xbox games won't fit on a cdrw? you will be kinda limited a bit
just my 2 pence worth

First off, the xbox drive is a DVD Rom Drive, not a CDRW drive. Most games are over 1GB so what good would it have to put a CDRW drive in an xbox anyway??
I would imagine that there are DVD Drives out there that can be hacked to work on the xbox. You would have to have knowledge of where to find the firmware to upgrade the drive so it would read the Xbox disks.
I really think you are spinning your wheels though. No use in trying to reinvent the wheel. Just go to Ebay and look for modded Samsung drives, or check around some modding sites for one. It's the fastest reading drive for the xbox that I have seen. Very nice.

HA..you got me on a technicality!!
I have heard of some people flashing new hacked firmware to some DVD drives and getting DL burns to read...
Not sure what to believe. I just haven't seen enough claims yet. I would love to be able to get my DL disks to read. I tried burning Ninja Gaiden to one and it wouldn't read. I burn my longer movies (Lord of the Rings) to DVD9 disks and they read in all my VCRs, even my real old cheap one...but they won't read in my Xbox at all. I have tried all drives.
later man

pretty looking thing ain't it?
I swear I have seen on where someone has modified the yellow cable so you don't need to keep the original in.
I think i would rather the pot mod to all that tho

I purchased a Memorex DL DVD9 16X Burner for MY PC about two months ago. I have used it to burn tons of movies on DL disks but my xbox never reads any. I have tried in a Samsung, Phillips and Thompson and they didn't work in any of them, yet they work in my ancient cheap'o dvd player that is in my daughters room.
