Well, quality usually dictates price. I have installed several chips now and have watched the trends and thousands and thousands of posts throughout several different forums.
More expensive chips are expensive for a reason. As are less expensive chips. Also, it's a good thing you like to solder...since you have a 1.6 you will need to reubild the LPC.
If you use a Xenium or a SmartXX you will be able to use the new LPC rebuild PCB's which are a very sweet new item. They cut your LPC rebuild in a third of the time that it normally takes. Out of all the chips I put in the 1.6's the easiest by far is the Xenium Ice. At 49.99 it's not the most expensive, but it's also not the cheapest.
To store games on the Xbox HD you should buy a larger HD. I would recommend not going under 120GB, but if you are pinching pennies you can get an 80GB HD for 39.99 after rebates. Granted it takes 89.99 out of your pocket right away, but at least you get 50 bucks back. Best Buy is running the sale on the WD 80GB HD.
The stock HD just isn't going to give you many options as far as saving your games to HD. You will only have a little over 4GB to work with and a lot of great games are larger that that.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I use the program called DVD-X2, it is a dongle free dvd player with great features. I recommend it to anybody not wanting to pay $30 just for a remote. _________________
