Hello all,
I'm having a hard time with my xbox
I bought a supposedly chipped xbox 1.4 I believe. The previous owner stipped 3 of the screws so I can't open it up to check and be sure, but that is the least of my problems.
When I turn the system on I get the normal xbox logo and then goes into avalaunch. My main prob is that I can't get the system to read xbox games, it will read dvds(burns are hit or miss but actual movies play fine). I'm trying to rip games on to the HDD but it doesn't recongnize anything in the drive. Is this some sort of normal problem? If so sorry for wasting everyone's time
I also am having a very hard time trying to FTP to the system, tried Qwix, FlashFXP and the Xbox FTP client that was on the system. None of them have been able to connect to the system and yes I've been using a crossover instead of a normal cat5.
Thanks for any help in advance from a frustrated NOOB

Are you using DVD-r disks?
As for FTP are you setting the password and user name to xbox?
did you turn off passive mode?

These are actual games that I'm trying to rip to the HDD. But the last batch of copies movies were dvd-r I believe.
I was using xbox as the password and user name, so I'm wondering the previous owner changed it and if he did is there anything that i can do?
would I be turning off passive on the ftp program or on the xbox?

If your disk drive can read a movie and all that stuff but not an actual xbox game you got one odd problem man, you need to find a way to get it open to make sure it is an xbox disk drive.
When you eject the tray does it look like one of the trays in the pic?
If the xbox can read the disk then you just need to install xbox2dvd as an APP on your xbox and use it to copy games to the HDD.

According to the pic, it looks like a thompson.
the system already has dvd2xbox and complex tools on it, and when I tried to use them to rip a game to the HDD it would just tell me the drive is empty.

If the old owner has set the password you would need to use Auto Installer Deluxe (http://aidtracker.com) to reinstall your dashboard.. That way everything will be set to default.
You should be able to find statistics on what hdd etc is installed on your xbox in the avalaunch dashboard somewhere..
Worst case scenario is get a new drive and chuck it in.. If you really have a modchip fitted then just insert a burnt copy of AUto Installer Deluxe and it will auto format the drive.. You can then install dashboards and everything else to get it up and running again.
This way. you still always have your older hdd to rollback to if you get stuck.

Never gave thought to reinstalling the dash, hoping to not have to go that route but worse case it is always an option. If I burn the autoinstall onto a disk will it auto launch?
How big of a HDD would be recommended? and is there a particular brand that works best? according avalaunch it is a 120 gig maxator in there now.
Thanks for all the help,

Hello all,
Back again, burned the auto installer onto a dvd-r and when I turned the system on it went right into avalaunch. Went thru XBMC and check a few other apps and each one said that the drive was empty. So I'm beginning to think the drive is either dead or something has come loose.
2 questions
1) do I have to replace the Thompson with another Thompson or any of the other drives work? And any recommendations as to which is best? It doesn't want to play movies thru region X anymore which is just further the suspicion the the dvd drive is dead
2) any suggestions for the best way to get the stripped screws out?
Thanks in advance,

For a striped screw i always used a machine screw with a starter point on it and jam it in there and start turning with pressure.
Any xbox drive will work and the samsung 605 is the best for sure.

First bit of good news.
Got the screws out at least
Softmod with a 250 gig HDD, bonus of sorts
Got it to read movies again, it will read a game disk as being in there just cant get it to play (yet)
Couldn't use dvd2xbox to rip a game, got abut 20% thru with complex tools and it just booted the disk out. and Px HDD loader just stopped before it hit 1%.
Really beginning to think the dvd drive is on it's last legs sadly.
Any other suggestions as to what I could do?
Edit: when I start the system with a game disk in it avalaunch tries to boot the game and after 3 unsuccessful loads it goes to the avalaunch dashboard
Thanks in advance

For lack of sounding like a total NOOB, which i am.
Which file should i try and activate when i put the auto-installer in the system? Burned it onto a DVD-r and it wouldn't auto-load, but I was able to read the disk thru the file manager and thru XBMC. So I just didnt know if I burned it wrong? Used Nero and did it is an ISO, would a boot disk have been better?
If you can read the disc contents through file manager try clicking on the `default .xbe` and see if that launches it.
Also if its softmodded you might want to clear the cache, navigate to E/cache and delete everything in the cache folder, if you have folders `X` `Y` & `Z` delete everything in those. _________________

Sorry to have gotten away from things.
I picked up another system for 35 bucks. It has the Samsung drive so Yeah.
I've gotten it to play games and ripping one as I type.
Downloading AID 4.5 and hope fully after that I'll be able to get the xbox and the PC to talk
