Alright, I successfully softmodded my box. I've followed two tutorials on how to FTP to your Xbox (both basically give you the same directions anyway) perfectly. My box simply will not communicate with my PC. Sorry for the n00b questions, but I don't really know what else to do or where else to inquire. Some info for you:
I'm connecting PC-Xbox directly, via crossover cable.
The cross over cable is home made and pretty old (we made it years and years ago to connect two Gamecubes for Mario Kart)
I'm using a refurbished Xbox.
I've turned off my firewall and specified an IP address.
I've changed my Xbox settings to static.
I'm pretty certain I'm doing the FTP stuff right.
Basically, it just doesn't connect. I read somewhere that there are network lights on an Xbox. I've never seen these before. Where are they located? Is it possible that the ethernet port on my box could be bad? I know it's possible that the ghetto rigged crossover cable is bad.
Any help is very, very appreciated.

Welcome to xbox-hq. Hope you enjoy this site and all the others we have to offer. The network lights are on the back of the xbox where the crossover cable connects to the xbox aka the ethernet port. There should be two lights underneath the port, one green and one orange. If you have the cable plugged in and those lights aren't going, then you have a bad cable. It would be more probable to say that the cable is bad instead of the ethernet port.
You should specify your xbox's ip address to 192.168.0.3 then reboot the xbox. On your computer, go to "Start" "Control Panel" "Network and Internet Connections" "Network Connections" Then right click your "Local Area Connections" and click "Properties" Click on "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and then click the "Properties" button. Now, make sure that the "Use the following IP address" is selected. Type in this IP address, 192.168.0.4 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Click "Ok" Note: your computer may need to be restarted if you are using an older version of Windows.
Hope this helps. Let me know what FTP program you're using after u follow those steps then we can go from there. I recommend Flash FXP. You can download it here: http://www.flashfxp.com/download.php if you don't have it. _________________

Must be the cable then. I have flash FXP. I've specified both ip addresses to exactly what you said I should as well.
Also, my xbox doesn't seem to want to save my network settings (I'm using UnleashX, by the way). It saves the IP address ok, but it won't save the subnet mask, or DNS settings. Any idea what the problem here might be?

If I was you I'd just set the dash to DHCP so that it will get an ip address automatticly. Thats how I always connect my xbox. _________________

It has to be the cable if you're not getting any lights on the back of the xbox when you plug the calbe it. It doesn't save the DNS and Subnet Mask because they are set when your xbox gets the IP address. Try a new crossover cable and if you still don't get any lights then I would check the ehternet port in the xbox because you should have lights. _________________

All right, it's not the ethernet port. I have confirmed that. I was able to FTP to my box at a friend's house through his router, using a straight through cat5 cable.
You just use the regular ethernet port on your PC if you're using a crossover cable, right? Like, the same one that plugs into the router?
(My router doesn't have an extra port, if you couldn't guess by now. )
I'll get a new crossover cable and see if I have any luck on my PC.
