I successfully performed the softmod. Loaded XBMC 2.0 onto the machine and played around with it. Very cool piece of code. I got the bright idea to upgrade the XBMC 2.0.1 by deleting the original XBMC folder from the drive. Seemed innocent enough. Now the box comes up in the Evolution X screen at power on and that's it. You can look at System Settings or Launch a Disk from there and that's about it. The FTP server is running and I can FTP in just fine. It will run retail games through the Launch Disk option. I can run Slayer from that same launch point. I tried various Slayer HDD retail restore options. None got me back to booting into Linux/XBMC. Also the Mech Assault exploit to perform the softmod no longer seems to work.
It is very close to being right, but I know some little thing is not and I can't figure out what to do. Any thoughts out there......yeah..I know....I wouldn't be posting this if I had made a backup of the XBOX HDD. (read: more DUMB).
Thanks.

Quick fix wold be to just pop in the AID 4.10 disc and redo the softmod with it if you had not put a lot of info on the hdd.

Thanks. I will download that and give it a whirl. I noticed there is the 4.10 version and then there is a 4.10 patch that was released later. Will I need the patch as well?

You dont need the patch but it adds a lot of nice little addons to the disc.

I downloaded AID 4.01 from XBOX-HQ. Made the disk from the ISO image and that seemed to boot OK. I got the screens with all the options. I chose the option to redo the softmod. When the mod completed I got a failure message saying it could not rename something. So I went back and unmounted the vitual c: drive (probably should have done this first). Went back and redid the softmod which seemed to go OK. I loaded all the apps and tried a reboot.
So here I am now with the infamous "Service Required. Call Customer Support" screen. I am getting an error 14 (which I have not yet looked up) but certainly this can't be good.
Any other thoughts? Yeah I know...what a boob.
thank you in advance.

Same thing as above (error 13). This time it is also a little mistake from you on changing names or having played around with files on the xbox harddisk. Error 14 is most often because you changed boot orders or names of startup files on the harddisk. It can also happen when you are rebuilding your xbox harddisk with a slayer cd and the power was cut.
If it will still boot the aid disc use it to reinstall the MSdash to C and backup the msdash and eeprom then try the softmod reinstall again.

It will boot up with the Xbox graphic and then it will run a real Xbox game (I brought up Splinter Cell). It does not do the same when the AID disk is installed. Instead it brings me back to the error 14 screen.
Am I at the point when the HDD is hosed up to badly to recover? Any other ideas?

I noticed looking back through our thread that you had said AID 4.10. I believe I loaded an AID 4.01 ISO image onto the DVD. Does that misstep cause any problems?

The disc is not launching is the prob but the error 14 is a bad msdash (14 - dashboard - Error loading dashboard (dashboard generic error)

By renameing or moveing the msdash you get the error, you need to find some way to get the ms dash back on there such as a live game or getting the aid disc to boot.

I presume that you believe the AID d1ck should come up. Is there any problem with it being 4.01 rather than 4.10? Since I got the AID disk to come up prior to whatever I did to kill the Xbox, it should be a good disk.
When you say to use a "live game" you are referring to Xbox live? Is that correct. I am not familiar with this process. Does Xbox live force there to be a working dashboard through a download from them?

a new xbox live enabled game will reinstall the dash for you, so use any newer game that has xbox live on it and dont hook up to the net.
If the copy of aid ran befor it should be fine, did you put the disc in and turn the xbox off then back on?

I tried bringing up AID from cold start (power on). Same Error 14 screen.
Tried loading Xbox live enabled game : Star Wars Battlefront II (without network connection). It came up just fine but I wasn't sure what else I needed to do to try to get it to load the MS Dash. Did I miss something?

select XBox Live and it should update the dash for you, or go to XBox Live, and select Account Recovery, as this seems to also update your Dashboard. Just quit when it asks you for account details.
Make sure the network cable is unhooked.

OK so I tried using Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects and Halo 2 as well as the Star Wars game. Each one makes a reference to going to the dashboard and acts as if it might be loading something but what results is the blanking of the screen and then the Xbox logo screen (like you get just after power on) and execution resumes with whichever retail game I have in the DVD drive. I tried cold booting from the AID disk in each test case after having reached that point. I get the same Error 14 screen.
I have a Xebian Linux disk. The Xbox won't load that either. Pretty much booting to anything other than a retail game doesn't seem to work at this juncture.
Since the format on the HDD is not compatible with a PC (FATX vs FAT32), I would guess there is not much point in trying to remove the HDD from the Xbox to try and do some manual file surgery via the PC.
Any other suggestions?

Well man since you cant seem to update the dash or boot aid there is a way to reset it to stock.
Hot swap it like this http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html i really hate to tell you to do that since the xbox is not a full on brick but that all up to you.
