Sounds like the controller port is dodgy.
open up your XBox and swap ports 3 & 4 with ports 1 & 2.
Its an easy job, they just clip off the mobo & unscrew from the case _________________

It could be that the connectors just loose if hes ever taken it apart. _________________

User 1 do ya know of a good tut on tsoping the xbox btw?? I noticed you had two that are tsop'd and I can't find a decent tutorial on it and I'm banned from xbox-scene so please none from there. _________________
I only used it for solder point reference, once its soldered and re-assembled, i would perform a `softmod` on the XBox (do this so you can boot burned media) then flash the TSOP with the `Eurasia pro generic flash disk`
