Hello everyone,
First of all, thank you for looking at this topic and for any help that you may be able to provide to me.
My sons Xbox stopped working one day and is now receiving the "Universal Error Message" (Serivce required message in different languages) along with error code 16 in the upper left.
It seems that this error code is associated with files possibly being corrupted in the dashboard. To be completely honest, I've never even played with the Xbox so I'm a bit unfamiliar with its software - but the good news is that I am computer savvy.
Since MS told me it would cost $79 for them to fix, I figured I'd take a stab at trying to fix it myself and found this site and then searched and searched and searched and can't seem to find a good answer.
Some quick info about the Xbox:
1. As far as I know, it has not been soft or hard modded. It has never been physically opened and he has no idea what softmod means.
2. The Xbox is about 3 years old. I'm not positive of the version and haven't been able to find out how to discern what the version it is.
This is what I've tried:
3. I downloaded AIDeluxe 4.1 lite (extracted it with WinRAR) and burned the iso to disc. DVD Decrypter tells me that the operation completed successfully but if I explore the disc afterwards I can not see any info on the disc other than a desktop.ini file. DVD Decrypter also tells me that the burned disc has a session on it. So, I tried to burn it to 2 other discs with the same results.
I tried all 3 discs in the Xbox to no avail. I recieve the same error code 16.
If you could help me the following questions, I would be grateful:
4. Can I use AIDeluxe 4.1 lite to try an fix this since the box is not modchipped?
If so, any suggestions on what I am doing wrong with either the disc or using the AID?
5. I thought about trying the SID, but it seems that the Xbox would need to boot into one of the 3 games needed (we have Splinter Cell) to be able to add the Gamesaves. Since the Xbox won't boot into a game or AID (we tried Xmen and the AID), I'm not sure I can do the sofmod.
Am I correct in assuming this? If not, are there any suggestions on what or how I can do this sofmod?
6. Any other suggestions on how to get this back up and running?
Further notes:
I've searched and read a lot of topics on this site about trying to fix this to no avail before I've asked the forum for help and, again, would appreciate any help that you may be able to provide.
Also, would any responses please be easy to understand since I'm not yet up to speed on all the lingo and acronyms.
Thank you,
diatribe

A pc cant read the aid disc since its in a diff format so that wont help.
You cant run a burnt disc in an xbox unless you have soft modded it or chiped it.
Sid wont help since sid is a program for softmodding the xbox.
If you install a chip in the xbox this will fix whats wrong with it.
If the xbox can still boot up a game you can use a xbox live game to install a new dash but i am not sure that will work.
I hear it dose work.
Hope this helps and welcome to xbox-hq .

Sorry man i never said how to update the dash.
If you have any game with xbox live on it put it in the xbox and turn the power off then with the game still in thare turn it back on if the game loads just select to go on xbox live and it will install the update for your dash and hopefully that will fix your error.

Thank you for your responses.
Would I have to have the Xbox setup to actually connect to the Xbox Live to try this?
Thanks again,

No man just run it as if you was.
The dash is on the disc and it installes the update before you log on.

you want the network cable unplugged when you do this. Im not sure if this will work though. The xbox searches for the clock before it boots. _________________
