I just purchased a used x-box and the bastard did say it had a bad hard drive.
I don't have the Eeprom nor a mod chip.
I've read about a hot swap but since the drive doesn't boot I'm out of luck, right; or can a create a fresh install on a new hard drive leaving it unlocked then plug it into the xbox and shut it down?

I think if I get a mod chip I can solve this problem but I'm not very good at soldering.

have you checked to make sure the ide cable is properly plugged into the harddrive? otherwise, since you said your not great at soldering, I'd go with a solderless chip.
