Hi all, I'm Chris and I'm new to the xbox modding scene. My girlfriends little brother got a 360, so he gave he his old modded xbox for free. What I'd like to know is if there is some way to know if the xbox has been chipped or soft-modded (he never specified). I looked through the guide links topic, but didnt find anything. All i know about it is that it is running an old version of unleashx, and I would like to update or just replace it with XBMC. So if someone could help me out or point me to a topic to solve my problem I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Just check your save files and see if you have an Action Replay save for 007, mech assault or splinter cell and the bolts have never been taken out the bottem if you do its a softmod.
If you look in the left side vents and see an led light on the mother board and the bolts have been removed then it must be chipped.

You can also go to the file explorer and look in the c partition. If you see a folder called SID its modded with softmod installer deluxe.
The best way to update your box is to download the AID disc--> www.AIDeluxe.com . AID comes with all the newest versions of every xbox app and utility you'll need to fully unlock the potential of your modded box. Either way, softmodded or chipped, its not gonna matter in the end. _________________

Thanks for the replys guys. I couldnt find any saves for the games above, so I assume it is chipped. On the other hand, I cant see into my side vents because of the shiny metal peice right behind them, I also seem not to be able to find the bolts. But since you said it doesnt matter what I started with, Im not too worried. When i use AID, should i just install whatever dash i want as an app, or is there some way to change it from unleashx without wiping my drive?

The bolts are under the 4 foot pads an there are 2 under the stickers. _________________

It makes things much more ez if you make it an app then you can install X-select to switch to one or the other from your boot screen.
But im allmost sure that aid has a app on it that will make what ever dash you want a default dash.

OK, i think i've come to the conclusion my box is soft-modded. I looked on the bottom, and all four foot pads are still glued down, as well as any stickers. Also, X-select does not want to load on startup (which someonelse with a soft-mod was having trouble with), even though it boots up when i load the evoxdash.xbe file from the file explorer (and yes its on the C drive). So what I'm wondering now, if indeed i am soft-modded, can i still format the drive with AID, have the SID install XBMC as my dash, and still have it all work like it does now? Or will i have to find an action replay, and a copy of 007 or mechassault or something?

I dont know to much about the softmods but i dont think you want to format the whole drive or it will wipe out the exploit file it uses to run .
Look in to and read up on SID I think it can do what you need and its for softmodded xboxs.

Lemme give you some advice....
Things you NEVER want to do with a softmod:
format the drive
delete the gamesave exploit
unlock the hdd
delete your evoxdash.xbe
delete any files off your C partition that you are unsure what they do
If you follow those basic rules, you wont have any major problems. _________________

OK so it seems i dont want to wipe my harddrive. But i still would like my xbox to boot directly into XBMC not unleashx. How can i do this? Thanks for all the help so far.

OK gonna try using the XBE shortcut thing. Only problem is i dont know what to replace. In the root C folder, there is evoxdash.xbe (X-select), and xboxdash.xbe (which does nothing when i open it). Now there is also a fonts folder, with ux.xbe in it (which i assume is uneash x). So which do I need to replace, and can i burn the shortcuts to a cd then transfer them from there onto the xbox, or do i have to ftp it (which ive never done before)
edit: little off topic, but i was copying some music from a data dvd using XBMC, when all of a sudden, the copy option was greyd out, and i couldn't copy anymore songs. I never took the dvd out or anything, it just all of a sudden wouldn't let me copy or move files (even ones on the hard drive). Do i need to update it? (got it off AID 4.1)
edit: i cant seem to copy in unleashx either, it gives me error code 3 no matter what i try and copy.

what softmod did you use to mod the box. FTP in and have a look at the folder structure on the E drive what do you see there? You should just be able to load the XBMC files to the E drive (after backing up the current files) and rename the XBE file to evoxdash.xbe

Thats the things, got it from my girlfreinds lil bro do i dont know. It shows no signs of being modded, but i cant find any AR or MA or 007 saves. And as for replacing evoxdash.xbe, its on the C drive, and i believe unleashx loads up its ux.xbe file upon booting, so should i replace that? and do i just need to connect an ethernet cable between my xbox and pc and grab a program to tansfer files between them?
