What is a craterd Hard Drive?
Before you even consider doing anything, you need to know the basics.
Read "Beginner's Guide to Xbox Hacking"

This should save you some time and answer a lot of the basic questions regarding modding your Xbox

I dont need to "mod" the xbox do I ?
All I want to do is replace the BAD hard drive with a new one.
Can you direct me how I need to do this and what software I need to do it... I am a system builder - and rebuild and build computers daily, however, the Xbox setup is a little different.

At this point, I need the basic steps after its taken apart...

If you can't read off of the original hdd then you would have to chip you xbox. Reason being that the mobo and hdd are married by the eeprom. A softmod requires a hdd to be locked by the eeprom. A chipped board doen't require this. Click on some of the links to look at the different modchips. Once chipped you will have the option of reading the eeprom for backup porposes or leaving a hdd unlocked.
