my Xbox has a mod chip, I am wondering whether I can copy the DVD movies to it's hard disk and play directly from Hard Disk? The problem I have is that kids keep scratching the discs.

There are several different programs which convert DVDs to single files for playback on Xbox, unfortunately you cant play a raw ripped dvd yet.
If you look up on google "DVD to XviD" you will find heaps of programs that could do it for you. Personally myself I use a program called Gordian Knot, which is a little bit more advanced to use, mainly for the fact its not a simple one-click system.

Well HEJL YEA i dont like the huge files made by DVD2XBOX or the PXHDD LOADER so i opt out for the avi move.
I use dvd shrink to get it to a raw form then i use total video converter to put it in to avi format, total video converter AKA TVC is not freeware but it will convert anything in to anything and that works well with my xbox, zune and ipod not that i have one but psp and so on too.
Why use 3 or 4 gigs of space when i get most flix down to about 750MB and still get a good and watchable movies.
For the most part i just use dvdshrink with nero and burn discs since i put the dvds up and keep the kids out of them and that keeps my xbox hdd free for more games apps and what ever you got, i still have like 75 gigs on my 300 gig hdd of free space but i love to have room to spare.

so when i have a dvd in my drive and i have the converter, it will take the two files audio and video folders and convert them into 1 raw file? correct? or does it take one more step and take it from the drive and do everything i need and come out with a readable file?

I cant say for sure with all converters but with the one i use, Total Video Converter once you got the dvd down to an audio ts and video ts i click New Task.
Then it asks you what format you want to convert to once you select avi that will bring up a drop down window go to the video ts folder with your vts .vob files check the ones you want to convert.
Click convert now and your on your way to makeing an avi.
I wold guess that most avi converters run the same way give or take a step, and the audio folder is thare to look cool its not needed at all.
If you got a burnt dvd you want to convert thats ez enuff you click new task and go to rip dvd.
Once you get a good converter its ez to fig what you got to do and if you just op for a free one and are not sure about its set up just drop me a line and whare you got the app and ill see if i cant help get it running.
