heres the deal i just started going back to school for computer science and was about to pack up my old xbox and store it away when i realized i can probly do something with it, a while ago i painted it so it has no stickers that might provide model# but im sure its the first version of xbox, western digital HD, all inside components manufactured in NOV 2001... im pretty much a broke college student, the box isnt modded, i dont have memory cards or anything like that, i do though have a crossover cable, and im wondering if i can network the xbox so i can communicate with it, i have an xbox360, so my xbox is useless as a console and i basically just want to turn it into a storage device/second computer or maybe just send movies to it from my laptop, watch the movie on TV delete it and watch a new one.........any one care to share knowledge?

Do you own a copy of splinter cell or mech assult? If so, download AID 4.1 and burn it to a DVD-R. Use it to transfer the SID game exploit files to your hard drive and then use the appropriate game to softmod your console. Then u can just use AID to install xbmc. Thats all you'd need to watch movies, copy games etc. all free of charge unless you need to pick up splinter cell or MA which are like $4 used
I believe U can also just boot with the aid disc and use it to ftp back and forth from your pc to the console.

Get SID 5.01 and get either mechassult, 007 agent under fire or first splinter cell(none platinum) and install the softmods. Then you can FTP everything onto it. You will need to get a bigger hard drive to do much with it though. _________________

Any version of Splinter cell will work. I used the platinum to softmod my boxes.

You will need a memory card though to transfer the gamesave exploit over. You'll also need either a store bought or homemade action replay. If you need helping making one let me know. I've walked a couple people through it allready. _________________
i cant ftp the gamesave file? im not buying a memory card... i dunno if theres anyone in the nyc area that can just do it for me or something cause i really dont want to buy anything, as it is im probly going to have to rent splinter cell and thats already more money then i want to spend, why cant i just use a crossover cable and ftp the files to my xbox?

Cuz only hacked dashs have a FTP server in it, and the stock MS dash doesn't. So you can only ftp if you have a modded dash like UnleashX or EvoX. _________________

If you boot with the AID disc you can ftp or you can do what I did and just copy the SID files from the AID disc to your hard drive. I never needed a mem card or anything other than my console, the AID disc and splinter cell. I copied the files, rebooted with the game, loaded the linux file and had my box softmodded in less than 10 minutes

Ya the original bios wont boot unsigned code, AID is most defantaly unsigned code. _________________

Makes sence. My box was softmodded via hotswap when I ran the disc. I didnt realize you couldnt use it on an un modded box. My bad
If you feel really couragous, you could hotswap your drive and use xboxhdm to setup your soft mod. Be warned that there are alot of risks doing it this way. I have used this method on 2 of my xboxes and had no problems but, many others have had severe issues, most comonly dead drives due to static electricity. I do alot of pc work so I have antistatic pads that I do all mine on. Not to mention a few pc's that I could care less about that I do all my hotswapping with
