My main concern in modding my xbox is to use it for video playback. I have been looking around and I see tons of different options on chips to use. Are there any specific chips that would support more codecs or will that just be a software issue after installation? Are there any hard drives to avoid when making the upgrade? I am also interested in emulation so that is something to be considered.

Any suggestions on a good solderless mod chip? I haven't done any soldering so I wouldn't really want to risk screwing up my system. I am comfortable with working inside a computer this is just an area I lack experience in.

Any and all advice and shared experiences will be appreciated.

Have you considered a softmod? Way cheaper and easier than chips. No hardware or soldering required. Codecs and emulators are all software and have nothing to do with hardware. If you're looking for playing movies and stuff, I recomend using Xbox Media Center (XBMC) atleast as an application, if not as your main dashboard. For a harddrive, theres a section on the page showing which ones are lockable and which ones are not.

Ive got a Hyperx mod chip in my V1.6 xbox...its good for $35 if you know what your doing. It took me about a month to get the chip working and my new HDD in, but now that i know how to do it, its pretty easy. If you want a great chip, get a Xecuter 3 CE. If your getting a solderless chip make sure you know what version your xbox is.

Link to figure out xbox version:http://www.mod-chip.com/Lite/How_To_Identify_Xbox_Version.pdf

Link for Xecuter 3 CE:http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_xbox_main.htm

Link for solderless Xecuter 3 CE:http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_xbox_main.htm

Link to Hyperx(solderless chip):http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_xbox_main.htm

Also here is a link to the inside of a V1.0 xbox if you wanna see the inside of one.

Since I am not interested in playing on xbox live I don't have to worry about the drive being lockable...at least that is what I think I am reading. I was hoping to get a rather large sized hard drive.

He was saying that because for a softmod you would need the drive to be lockable. I would recommend the Xecuter 3 chip it has a solderless adapter but It is always better to solder chips in. For $55 I would install the chip and set up your new hard drive with everything you need for movies and emulation and I would also flash what ever chip you get with the best bios available. Either post here or PM me if you are interested. Either way I will help you with whatever you need just let me know.

Yeah dude, If your not looking to do any actual work, or just want to save yourself the trouble, burner will hook you up fat.

Take up Burner, he is professional it seems. My personal favorite modchip is SmartXX get either v2 or 3, they are very simple and will help for a newbie not looking to learn much. They have solderless adapters for it too.

One distro: http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/catalog/SmartXX-v3-EXTREME-Xbox-Mod-Chip-p-2551.html
Another is Divineo.com

I never used either site to buy because the site I would recommend I don't think is in business anymore. Otherwise, for a rather large drive, I would find out if it's lockable if you're only going to softmod.

Edit: Oh yea, and a place for the Hyper X chip, much cheaper, and if burner is setting it up for you, probably easier to deal.
