It talks about replacing your Xbox DVD drive with just about any regular PC one. My question is, this guide requires that you have your Xbox open as you can't just replace the old drive but have to keep both drives to have it working. Has this changed since the article was written in like 2003? Can I now just take out the old drive and replace it with any other PC DVDROM drive?
I know I can swap DVDROM drives if they were originally used by the Xbox, like the Thompson, Phillips and Samsungs but what about non original Xbox dvd drives. Thanks

its kinda that simple, so far the only computer dvd drive you can use is a LG8164 they sell them here http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/search.html and you can buy them a couple ways, already modded and "flashed" with the new firmware, stock, and also you can buy the "solder" chip or solderless chip to convert them to xbox, but if you by the chip you have to flash it with your home pc. any questions just ask _________________ (2) XBOX v1.4:

Thanks, seems expensive to go that route though. I guess I'll just stick with the drive now and keep checking ebay for a cheap Samsung drive, though currently they are about as expensive to get as that LG one.
I might also try tweaking the pots on the DVD drives and was thinking about getting a multimeter.
I was looking at these three from Amazon.
Multimeter 1
Of the above three, which would you choose. I plan on using it for other stuff too so it isn't just for the Xbox DVD drive to check OHMs. If anyone has any other suggestions, please say so as well. Thanks again

I might get one if the price ever drops to a more reasonable price range for me.
