My segate baracuda 80gb hard drive just stopped working in my xbox when I was watching a movie in xbmc. Now it only powers up to the boot screen and makes repeated clicking noises in the hard drive. I have tried different bios and even unlocking the drive but to no avail. This has also happened in my cousin's xbox with the same model hard drive. If there is any way to recover the hard drive to be usable again or just recover any information, please let me know. Any help is appreciated greatly. You are also welcome to contact me through pm. _________________ If it's broken, repair it,

If your drive is making clicking and clunking noises you can pretty much guarantee its dead. It starts to make that noise as the arm jumps across the plateau of the disk, making reading data near impossible without a specialist program.
If it was an ordinary PC HDD, I'd recommend using GetDataBack, its an excellent program I used to recover my entire 200GB HDD after it died. Even though Windows wouldn't even detect it! It comes in two varieties, NTFS and FAT versions.
However, if your Xbox HDD is locked, I don't know how much success you'll have trying to get data off it. Either way, its definitely worth a try. Take the Xbox HDD out, put it as a slave in your PC, get the software and have a go, you may get lucky.
Bare in mind, if you are able to get the data off, the HDD will no longer be useable and the only place its heading is the bin. You may get lucky and find it's still in warranty, in which case Seagate will replace it for you.
Well i was actually able to unlock it with my smartxx v2 so hopefully it can work with GetDataBack. I think it should help with the fact that it is unlocked. The only problem i can see with it, is that xbox hard drives are formated with FATX instead of FAT. But maybe it won't affect it since FATX is a derivative of FAT. Anyways thanks for the help, i'm about to try the program now... _________________ If it's broken, repair it,

As they say, the best way to find out is to try it and see. You won't lose anything if it doesn't work.
If you think about it, FlashFXP (which is an FTP program) can read the contents of the drive and file format when it FTP's to the Xbox, there's no reason why GetDataBack shouldn't work really.
When i tried GetDataBack it never gave me an output file of any kind. So i tried it a few more times last night with different settings of FAT systems, (like FAT32, FAT16, and FAT12). I soon realized that it would have to specify FATX as the File System for the program to extract data properly. I thought i might try to boot it in the XBOX again, just for luck. And amazingly it booted up my dash! I started backing up last night and i just finished this morning. Even though its still working as of right now, i went through with backing up my data with FTP, just in case decides to die again.
My theory is that the program helped get the hd arm moving the right speed again, and may have "revived" it. Thank you so much for helping me find that program, because through that i was able to get the hard drive working temporarily so i could backup my data through FTP. Thanks again! _________________ If it's broken, repair it,

Good to see that it worked out for you. If I were you though I would definatly replace that harddrive before you lose all of your data for real. _________________

Glad it worked uber and that itlasted long enough for you to get your data off. I agree with bongripz, it is almost certainly worth replacing that HDD now though.
If you've got serial and model no, you can check on the seagate website to see if its still in warranty (its normally 3 years I think). That way you could get a free replacement.
Yeah i will probably send it back, but meanwhile i have ordered a Western Digital Caviar SE 200 GB from newegg.com. I have my data on it and it works like a charm. Thanks again for all the help guys. _________________ If it's broken, repair it,
