Reformated my softmodded 8GB retail HD with the latest aid disc. I must have forgot something in the install because I got error 13 and 14 after that. I was dumb and didnt research the problem then, so now it is on the famous error 16. I dont have any backups on my pc.
I have 2 blank harddrives a 25GB and a 250GB that I can use to fix this.
I also could easily access a working retail xbox.
Basically I want to know If I can fix this without a mod chip.
I have tried hotswapping and had no luck, if someone could show me a good tutorial on this I could try again. Have spent hours already following them trying to get it to work. No I cant boot games, and the microsoft logo doesnt come up. Is there a way I can use xbox hdm to just format a brand new hard drive and junk the old one. Given I dont have the eeprom or anything? Anything to direct me towards anyway of fixing this would be great.

The only way to get it back without a chip is to Hotswap mate...
and you can use any HDD that the Xbox can lock...
P.S. The only thing i can say is to read and read the Tut for hotswaping untill you understand what it's saying (every step).

Alright read throughly through the steps and have them printed out only thing is when I try expanding the MS dash file I got from pirrup to put in the xbhd iso disc it says there is a format error when it is about 50% done. Know where I could find the ms dash file anywhere else. In the meantime Im going to try redownloading pirrups.

Unzip the files into my documents first the coppy and past them in to the c folder IN XBOXHDM...... _________________

Made the disc by following the tutorial. Have a problem with xboxhdm now though. Seems to start up fine but when I enter 1 in as my first choice (VGA console with xbox-drive utilities) I get loading/Isolinux/fatximage...... then could not find ramdisc image initrd.gz It is in the xboxhdm folder when I create the iso. I have also burned the disc plent of times retrying it and doing it at the slowest possible speed 1x still no luck. I have also tried redownloading xboxhdm a few times and there is still no change.

How big is the file that you are Burning and how long dose it take to burn..
And what files are you putting on the disk:

The file size is 199 MB (208,863,232 bytes)
I am burning it with dvd decrpyter and it takes 5 mins max I think depending on speed. made around 5 discs now on different speeds.
Right after you posted your last reply I tried a hard drive that I know is unlocked and empty. Still came up with the same error, so my xbox hd I think is unlocking when I am doing the hot swap. The pc is not taking long at all to boot.
The Files I am putting on the disc are the ones the make-iso-win puts on there. which should include the MS dash I put in the C drive folder in the xbhdm folder.

Can you look and see what files there are in the xboxhdm files C,E,F and eeprom just so we can see that all is OK...?

you don't need anything in E, F and eeprom folders if hotswapping..
if not you will need eeprom file in the eeprom folder..(but i bet you allready know that... )

All the files on my cd are correct, it must be something with my Pc not liking it. Ill try it on a buddies pc.
If not, If i get a mod chip installed does it just boot the mod chip bios on startup or how does that all work?

also you have to have the back-up of the eeprom off the xbox, do you have that?

Got the same error from xboxhdm

It didnt work on both Pc's but the file is there on the cd. The only thing I can think to do is try a different brand of cd, because all 3 on these imation cd-r's all come up with the same xbhdm error.

Burnt the xbhdm disc with a different pc and it worked fine, so for whatever reason my brandnew burner isnt the greatest compared to the old cd-r burner I used that was probably on of the first of its type. Anyways it worked like a charm. Got the retail Hd working right softmodded it ftped eepron and C and E drives to my Pc and Made my 250 Gb hd to work in it and its working awesome. Thanks for the help guys!
