Sammys are the second best drive out there. there are only a few that where VGA and they are the best. But Sammy shouldn't have any reading problems at all

The Samsung SDG-605B is the better samsung drive, and should have no problems reading CD-Rs, provided they are burned correctly, on good quality discs.

On the other hand, the SDG-605F, from the v1.6 xbox, is not so good, and does not read CD-Rs.
