I have a friend with an unmodded Xbox he thinks he purchased a few months after the Xbox came out. Over the past month, it freezes up every time he plays it... usually have about a half hour, but never more than one and one half hours. The image on the screen just freezes, no FRAGS or anything else unusual. If he powers down and powers up, it freezes as soon as the startup animation begins. If he shuts it off for a half hour or so, it will work again for a short while.
He also told me he bought a copy of Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow when it first came out and the Xbox ruined it.. made several deep ringed scratches in it.
So, what is the diagnosis? One problem or two? Could a DVD drive problem alone cause this? Motherboard problem? _________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

His best bet would be, if he wants to try to salvage, is to purchase a refurbed Thompson drive. www.xboxrepairguide.com 29.95
That way, he's not dumping too much into it if it turns out to be the mobo. Now, I have seen mobo's relatively cheap, but the DVD Drive we know is bad because it's scratching disks, so it needs replaced anyway.
If he turns out just buying a new one, let me know. I buy broken machines for the cases.
BTW, I ran into one of your infamous D0 holes that really isn't a friggin hole. It was in a 1.3...man, did that suck. I saw the wildest thing while trying to solder to it. A piece of solder literally jumped from the friggin wire to the hole right next to it!! That hole sucked it right in perfectly too. I was so jacked off.
I saw a lot of solder jumping during this mod. That was the first time I had ever seen such a thing. This chipping session was really messing with my head!
Luckily, I have braid for desoldering 1.0's
I was momentarily bumming.

hi guys,
my mate ozzy just called me today and mentioned he is having the same problems but with a original game he has (cant remember what)..
He can play the DVD Game for like 30minutes or sometimes longer and then his xbox freezes.. He thought his xbox was gonna die but then decided to ftp the game directly onto his HDD..
Now the xbox doesnt freeze at all but this means he needs a new DVDROM drive..
If his DVD DISC is scratched like you say it is from the XBOX DVDROM DRIVE i would definately say the drive is cactus..
Always good to have a spare DVDROM drive even if its not stuffed..

You mean we can roll it up and smoke it?
I think I'm gonna transfer my POS Thomson into his Xbox and play it for few hours nd see if it works. If it does, I'll probbly take RealMcCloy's advice.
RealMcCloy, have you ever done the VGA mod in the xboxrepairguide??? What would the advantage to that be (other than now you have more monitors to plug it up to)? Can most computer monitors in the USA display PAL properly? Although so far, I've tried out a few PAL games, like Mashed & Ghost Master and they work (I'm not entirely sure these are STRICTLY PAL games, however, as I think one of the games had some files with "NTSC" in the name. Looks like an interesting mod, but I don't hve the balls to try it on my main Xboxs... maybe I'll try it on my buds! _________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

No, I haven't checked that portion out. Not sure what the advantages would be.
I have been concentrating on learning more about the innerworkings of the xbox like the bios and stuff. That guide was a great starter for me though as it gave me the balls to start soldering...HA.
Once I read the guide, I was like....man, I can do all of that.
I actually take his procedures and do variations of his mods. Sometimes I wasn't sure what he was thinking when he does something as I have found much easier ways, and other times I was like, "how could I have not seen that", so it was pretty enlightening either way.
I think I have only tapped about 30% of what my modded machine can do. I want to beef up my knowledge to be able to help more people. It sucks that there are so many different types of chips out there. I am extremely pleased with the Xenium Ice though.... last night I had to FTP to flash it and it was easier than making .ISO's and crap. From how on I am flashing it via the HD!!
I am going to make a tutorial on it. It's like five steps and the damn thing is flashed. No more worrying that you are making a correct bios cd. I was just about to start playing with the SmartXX chip but after trolling around the Xenium Ice OS I am amazed what this thing can actually do. I am going to play around with LCD Screens to connect to it too.
