It might well be the new IP stacks in Windows Vista which is causing the problem. Windows Vista encorporates a brand new IP structuring system (because the old IP addresses are running out).
The new IPv6 that Vista uses is always installed and enabled by default, so I would reccomend setting it back to the IPv4 structure that the Xbox uses.
Here's a guide on IPv6 so you can see what I'm talking about.
I Have had a similar problem with a pc running windows Xp, i use it for work so automatic updates are on for the OS. I used to be able to connect to the Xbox to FTP but no longer even get a connection. I have tested xbox connection using another PC running windows XP that has not been updated and everything is OK?
Could this be the same problem. I believe IPv6 exists for XP?

Microsoft Windows XP includes an IPv6 implementation intended for development use and trial network deployments.
Its support and connectivity is not guaranteed. Your best bet for the moment is to stick with the IPv4 setup and use addresses in the 192.168 range.
Does the IP still ping? _________________ Chimp Tutorial

No, does not even connect. I thought it was a cable problem at first. changed cables problem was still there so I tried another PC and no problems connecting.
I checked the TCP/IP install for the network connection on the troublesome pc and it did not mention IPv6. I ran the cmd line uninstall for IPv6 anyway which executed but I have not had time to test as yet
Vista's IPv6 is a total pain in the arse right now. Go to your "My Network Connections" right click on your net connections, and for each go to properties, then uncheck both IPv6 protocol boxes. Click ok, and if it prompts you to reboot; then do so. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

I'm with AngelosDracul, its a nightmare.
"Great, we've solved the IP address shortage problem, oh and by the way, they don't work well with the old type. You know, the ones millions upon millions of people are using, but thats ok right?"
I tested FTP with IPv6 unistalled from windows XP, still have no connection at a hardware level, which is very strange as I have used this PC many times before without a problem. I don't think it is hardware related as I have no problems connection to Xbox with another PC running windows XP ( not updated) and have no network problems with the PC in question when talking on the Lan to other PC's.
as I say this problem just started out of the blue?? I do get regulars windows updates- maybe I will try installing the NIC driver again????/
