Greetings people
I have been given a dead mk 1 xbox, the issue is the psu so I have a new one on order. The box has not been modded in any way.
I have a spare 250gb drive (unused) which I would like to shove in the xbox and then use it for XBMC.
I have read a lot on softmodding and I think I have managed to confuse myself.
can soemone please confirm what happens with a softmod? Is it to an eeprom or flash ram in the box or is is on the hdd?
Then is there a way that I can prepare the newdisk from scratch insert it into the xbox and it be automatically softmodded?( without ever touching the old disk)
I have no need to connect to live ever as the box will not be used for playing games.
I will download AID 3.1 tonight and burn the dvd etc.
I do not have a memory card or any way of connecting via a usb port, although I have lots of networking kit around the house.
I have pcs I can use to burn disks and I'm more than happy to rip computers apart if there is any hotswapping to be done.
Thanks
David

What a softmod does is it basically edits the memory in the hdd tricking the msbios to load unsigned code (or at least thats what i was told or something close along that line) _________________

So does that mean I can prep a new hdd from scratch with a softmod ready to go? Whilst leaving my existing reall xbox hdd untouched?
Thanks

No, you can't prepare the new drive without the original harddrive. You need to pull the eeprom.bin file off the original drive and use xboxhdm to prepare the new drive. What I normally do is softmod the original, open xboxhdm and make an exact duplicate of the original drive (including all the partitions).
Maybe there is a better way, I dunno, but this is the way I do it and it works.

all u need to do is load in sid on your existing hdd but u dont need to do a softmod on it. backup ur eeprom and then ftp into your xbox and get it from your U data folder then get hdm 1.9 and add all the msdash files into the correct areas then make iso batch file and burn it to disc then turn off your computer pull out your computer hdd then put in that new hdd and put in ur disc and then it should boot to the hdm screen then choose 1 then make sure you lock the hdd...not all that sure what button to press but yea then put it in your xbox _________________
