A while back I modded both my xbox and my brothers with a XXSmartchip and 250gb drive.
My brothers xbox recently died, and he would like to extract the files off his drive.
He locked the drive, so when I put it in my xbox it doesn't read it. I tried using the unlock utility from the smart chip, but it says it can not be unlocked.
Is there a work around? I thought I saw somewhere a while back, a way to do it from a PC. Searches have turned up nothing that looks like it answers my question.
Any help much appreciated...

If not, then you'll probably have to swap EEPROM chips (put his into your box, and unlock that way, then put your EEPROM chip back in). This requires a bit of soldering, and can be quite tricky.
If anyone else has any other ideas, please post. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

You can always use one of the online services to unlock the drive as well, but that depends on how bad you want the drive _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

i suggest you build the eerpom reader, or if you backed up the eeprom already you can either write the eeprom to your xbox using config magic, or use xboxhdm to unlock it. i like to use the same eeprom on all my 1.0 xboxes that way if one dies i can use another to retore the hdd. _________________ Please post all PC Questions at PC-HQ.com

It was actually the XBox that died, so I still have the SmartXX chip. Hopefully the chip still works, I think I backed up the EEProm on the mod chip.
If that is true, should I be able to put his chip in my XBox, reflash the eeprom from the chip to the xbox and be good to go?

Shoot, I tried it, the chip must be fried. The Xbox turns on, then off, then on and off 2-3 more times, then stays on and no picture or sound.
I am hoping my brother didn't throw his xbox out. Any way to extract the eeprom from a smartxx if it won't let an xbox boot? The lights on the chip still turn on, so maybe part of it is still good?

if you have the programmer for the chip, then re-flash it. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

Would it work if I pulled the EEprom from one xbox and soldered it into the other? They are both 1.6 Xbox
